Considering going with an ambidextrous mouse if anyone has recommendations
My current mouse is a Logitech Lightspeed G502, it works fine and aside from double click issue which I brought to a store to fix, no issues with it but it was my friend's prior mouse before he upgraded to a newer model.
As for why I want an ambidextrous mouse, on the rare occasions I want to use my left hand to navigate instead of right.
I used to use a chinese MMO mouse that honestly was not bad but its software was fairly garbage(Rebranded Red Dragon mouse iirc) so I don't mind Chinese mice as clearly being a brand name mouse doesn't mean much, just want something that is good and lasts a while, since I'm not that big on mice.
I want these qualities in a mouse.
- Works wired and with a 2.4GHz dongle
- Either rechargeable batteries or replaceable works
- High DPI
- Not a "lightweight" mouse
- Has a few programmable buttons
- On chip storage for programmed buttons/DPI/etc
- Available worldwide
Bluetooth as a 3rd option would be neat but not something I'm looking for in particular.
Rechargeable batteries are supposed to provide better longevity afaik, but the buttons or the mouse itself will probably die before the battery.
I use 8200 DPI on my current mouse pretty much in both games and in desktop... with mouse acceleration,
I only lower it on the rare occasions I use something like GIMP.
Not a fan of these perforated light mice or super light mice, I used to put weights in my previous wired Chinese mouse but I'm using the G502 without weights currently. I am willing to compromise on this if there are no options however.
On the G502 I only use 2 buttons regularly, and they are to switch to the left or right virtual desktop, the rest of the buttons have a function but they get rarely used (Except Windows+Tab to show all virtual desktops).
On chip storage is good when I switch platforms (e.g. PC/Windows, SteamDeck or Linux, Mac) and in case I want to completely drop Windows and not worry about needing software for the programmable buttons to work.
Worldwide availability because I don't live in the US or most parts of Europe.
Not aware if Logitech has a mouse that does all what I need, the free scrolling wheel is cool and gets used, but they got a history of switches that die too fast.
I have a G903 Lightspeed Hero. Lightspeed is the branding for Logitech’s proprietary gaming 2.4g dongle communication. They used to advertise it as having much better input latency than wired mice. It comes with a micro usb cable (that is slightly reinforced to be able to be used all the time without issue) for charging and wired communication. I think it has weights to add if you like a heavier mouse. I don’t know if it has on chip storage, but I think it does. The forward back buttons can be on either side of the mouse or both. It comes with magnetic buttons or blanks to set it up however you want. Not sure about the worldwide availability, but Logitech should be pretty well distributed.
I can confirm that it does indeed have onboard memory. Kind of obnoxious to set up now that they've changed their software for it though. I only discovered how while responding to this post believing it wasn't possible before stopping and trying something new. Turns out you have to click on one of the profiles (which I had expected to just swap to that profile, my bad) and then export the profile you've already got on the PC, instead of, you know, just modifying it as you would normally like you used to be able to do.
That said, I'm not sure I can recommend it even outside of that, I suppose now quite minor gripe with it. When I got it, it started double clicking exactly two weeks after I got it. I sent it back for a new one, and that one did the exact same thing, exactly two weeks after I took it out of the box. Couldn't send it back again however, as a bunch of stuff started up for quite a while just before I received the replacement. Maybe that's an anomaly, but I was hesitant to even buy a Logitech mouse given most of their mice often have double clicking issues at the time I bought it.
It is otherwise a nice mouse, but I've been plagued by double clicking for the 5 years I've been using it now. If there's one good thing I can say about it, I've had absolutely no other issues with it in that time apart from expected aging of the battery. (It is also only the left and right mouse buttons that double click, for whatever that's worth. Never had the issue with the scroll wheel or side buttons.) So I'm going to hopefully learn to solder and try to install some new switches in it fairly soon here and hopefully I'll be able to properly enjoy it then.
G903 would've been a default choice but my G502 is the only device I have that uses Micro USB(And the Vita too but I don't use that regularly), and I wanted to see what other options are there that the Tildes community know or use.
Yeah that is fair. That was basically the reason I got myself an MX master 3 for usb c. Life is great once you finally eradicate micro USB from your life (and to a lesser extent USB A).
This won't help you, but I can't help but chime in: I love my Logitech G300s (as a left-handed mouser), but they don't make them any more, and I really can't find a brand new one anywhere. Quite a few used ones are on sale on the Internet, and I even found motherboards being sold. I half dream of buying a motherboard and 3D printing my own mouse, because I literally cannot find a non-right-handed mouse with [more than 2] top buttons like the G300s has. Roccat used to make some, but they stopped, too. Nobody makes such mice any more. I find it really hard to believe that top clickers like me are that tiny a minority. All the many-button mice on the market now have their buttons on the sides, usually clustered up on the right-handed thumb side. Disappointing. I'm a "finger mouser", and I really can't press thumb buttons on a mouse without really slowing down and being very deliberate about it, which is a showstopper for action gaming.
If you want to stick with the common peripheral brands a Razer Viper or a Logitech G Pro Wireless would fit. That said, my understanding is peripherals are better outside of house hold names so:
Pulsar X2A - nearly bought a pulsar but went with Lamzu instead
Lamzu Atlantis V2 - less buttons but the side buttons are programmable. I have their Maya X and I love it
X2A seems to be closer to what I'd want than the Lamzus, but I didn't see a lot of YT reviews/vids for most of them, will keep the X2A in mind though when or if I decide to buy a mouse or not, white however is not a preferable color.
I'm more likely to go with a G903 than a Logitech G Pro(I can't find whether these use USB-C or still on Micro USB) but I'm scouting for some options or opinions.
