Any experience with GLG consulting?

I had heard about GLG a while ago and I was just approached by someone from GLG for a project. Does anyone have experience working with them specifically? I have never done any paid consulting gigs and I want to make sure I understand what I'm getting into.

Thanks!

I don't have specific experience with them, though I do with other contracting firms. You're going to get paid a lot less than managing it yourself, and you're going to be very much at the whims of their ability to match you with clients, but at the same time, you'll be exposed to a bunch of different experiences that you may not have had otherwise. Beyond that, unless you get a contract with base pay regardless of how often they find someone for you, you'll never be able to depend on the revenue. Really think about whether what they're offering is actually good for you.

Actually another question. Any recommendations for getting started in consulting outside of a company like GLG? Do most people just end up working part time for a couple people they know, but then...

Actually another question. Any recommendations for getting started in consulting outside of a company like GLG? Do most people just end up working part time for a couple people they know, but then keep expanding the network? Just curious about the building blocks for doing this full time.

For doing it full time, it's definitely a matter of building up from a few initial clients while networking like mad to build up your client base. It's actually something that can sometimes be done in tandem with working with a contracting firm, depending on relative demand (and whether there's clauses in the contract about competition or firms hiring you away.)

Great advice thank you. For me I wanted to dip my toe in a bit and see what the market is looking for. And like you mentioned get some different experiences with other companies. I don't need this revenue at this point, don't get me wrong it would be nice, but I think of it as getting paid to learn something new.

Ok, if that's your goal, then working with a contracting/temp company can make sense. You'll get dropped into a variety of situations and potentially learn a bunch. If you don't need the dedicated revenue and you have the flexibility to take jobs as they come, it can be a way to get a diversity of experience quickly.
