While Corey Doctorow's enshitification label is nothing new to the Tildes crowd, I figured that his contextualization of today's internet in economic and policy terms might be helpful for those after a refresher or who haven't had a chance to explore the root causes of today's internet death spiral. Also, CBC's Ideas is a banging podcast.

In an effort to explore the issue as a discussion, I'd like to ask:

What are your experiences in talking with people who don't live and breathe tech and developments?

    • Do they largely accept that this is the way the Internet is and will be?
    • Do they remember a better time?
    • Are they aware of the points touched on in this podcast?

Oh, it's cool Doctorow brings up interoperability here.

The first time I heard of him was at a digital conference a few years ago. Most of the conference frankly sucked (I think it was around the time of nft hype, and most of the speakers felt compelled to talk about them), and then at the end Doctorow presented a talk on interoperability. I hadn't heard this term before, and it was such a breath of fresh air to listen to and feel like I was learning something useful. I have no real point to this other than this podcast reminded me of this experience.

But, to contribute to the discussion a little, it's good to see a platform like CBC hosting him, where he'll hopefully get a wider platform of people less in a tech-adjacent bubble. I know he's canadian, and this is a Canadian platform, but Ialso appreciate that he's really referencing the Canadian context and policy here.

I'm not surprised that Doctorow and not the NFT bimbos was the one worth hearing. Authors, journalists, academics, teachers -- basically the people whose expertise we've devalued -- are the ones best suited to knit together a semblance of sense in the chaos.

I sometimes wonder whether liberal arts degrees will become something more than a punchline in my lifetime. I sure hope so.
