While I barely use Twitter, it would be nice to them to remove the spambots/fake followers. Blocking them so they don't follow me anymore takes way too much effort for something I barely use.

It shouldn't be too hard to weed out the obvious bots, but the sophisticated spammers are likely going to be hard to eliminate without taking some real users out with them.

Many of the real users culled by mistake will find they're better off without Twitter. It's a shithole.
It's really not that bad. I really enjoy it for shitposting and up-to-the-minute news on sports & games.
