I work in ML and more specifically algorithmic search

I'm interested in talking with anyone in eCommerce, or interested in ML, AI, Search or whatever you think I might care about ;)

What do you all do?

My concern is regarding reliability, stability and accuracy issues. I am looking at it mostly from a control theory perspective where, while it is OK to miss 5% of the search results or misclassifying 5% of the images, having a 5% error rate in a control system can lead to really bad behaviour. Also, I didn't realize how far away we are from a good AI until I started working in ML... OMG the sample complexity of all these algorithms (at least the ones I have used) is abysmal!

Anyway is your company hiring ? :-P

We are always hiring the right people - the introduction of consumers means that we can set reward parameters which allow ML to train substantially.

I'm studying high school and learning basically everything about programming I can find. I've made genetic algorithm for our college and now I'm trying to learn neural networks - and failed miserably.

How do you know how much to change weight of connection between neurons and neuron biases? With sigmoid function. Any idea? I just cannot make it work :-)

A chap in my office writes neural networks and one of those is entirely self learning, even down to identifying what constitutes a reward.

That is not what will cause the end of days, we will be destroyed by simple ML which has a benign reward system. Something that is trying to reduce road traffic accidents and realises that the best way to achieve that is to kill all humans.

The first machine which is bright enough to know it should hide its intelligence will end us all :)

Hey, I know I've read some story just about this! Some short story, I remember it. It was pretty good, I'll try to find it . What do your AIs do? Edit: the story was probably this writing prompt...

Edit: the story was probably this writing prompt on reddit, but I'm not sure if it's that one. I didn't even have it upvoted.

We test user behaviour against products to provide 121 experiences to promote the right products the the right people at the right time. It is not curing cancer, but it is fun.

I'm a mental health therapist hoping that my job will not be taken over by AI. From the little I understand of the previous posts, I think my job is secure, at least for now... EDIT: grammar

Are there any particular languages or frameworks that you find particularly appealing?

Not really, I am pretty much agnostic. We also provide analyst told to merchandisers, however.

I'm a recent college grad with a degree that focused on machine learning though it definitely doesn't sound like it (cognitive science) and I'm simultaneously applying to jobs and looking at masters programs in Data Science.

What's the best way to show what I know/ cater myself to hiring managers?

Does Data Science pigeon-hole me more or less into data warehousing?

Not at all, data science is great if you want to work in search, and that is where the cash is these days. You probably need to live in Mountain View, Bangalore or maybe Texas though.
