    Thanks for posting this. I have been thinking about reactivating my Facebook account to let friends and acquaintances know about a new project I have been working on, but this article was a good reminder that FB is terrible and I don't want anything to do with them. Maybe I'll start an email list instead.

      I'm a little surprised there aren't a couple of alternatives out there. Like a tildes for social media, something that is privacy conscious and such.

          Have you used Mastodon? It seems like more people talk about it now. To be honest with you I don't understand how it works.

    There's an NYT article today that's a bit similar as well. I thought about submitting it separately but I think it doesn't really say anything new on the topic, so I'll just drop it in here...

    That is: The guiding principles should be whatever encourages people to post more. Facebook’s actual value system seems less positive than recursive. Facebook is good because it creates community; community is good because it enables Facebook. The values of Facebook are Facebook.

    I requested my data and deleted my account a few months ago, following the whole Cambridge Analytica thing. It was the thing to tip me over the edge with the platform, along with all the pictures of people's lunch and local hate speech. I think the driving force for a lot of their users, even historically is the fact that everyone's on there, everyone's got a Facebook account. "Add me on Facebook", "Let me find them on Facebook and take a look". Scary really. Its become so innate in our social interaction as societies, so people don't really recognize the risks and how truly awful it is.

    TLDR;
    Deleted Facebook because it's awful.
    If I had friends I'd feel extremely left out.
