So rolling back on the insane user-hostile fuckery they've recently done. Purposefully not clearing specific tracking cookies when the user tells you to clear cookies should land someone in prison.

Unless you're forced to use Google Suite for work or school, don't let yourself be intimidated into staying in Google's ecosystem simply because leaving it seems daunting. You're not bound to anything. I don't use any Google products or services anymore, and save for YouTube, I don't miss it.
YouTube - Unfortunately there are no good alternatives. Invidio.us, however, can be used as a YouTube proxy to avoid running YouTube scripts in your browser.

Chrome OS - Linux or MacOS (I know, MacOS isn't ideal either). I can never recommend Windows 10.
Chromebooks are great little linux machines. On the x86 models you're basically guaranteed full hardware compatibility, you don't have to pay the windows tax, and good luck getting a traditional laptop with a 1080p IPS display and SSD for $200. Only downsides are the lack of function keys and soldered RAM. But you can remap the keyboard to get around it, and soldered ram is starting to happen in regular laptops too.
Too late for me. I already moved to Firefox.
I highly recommend Safari for Mac users, too.

Are you sure they were tracking cookies, and not just login cookies created by Sync? The article even refers to them as auth cookies.
Right but once you are logged into a google account they track you across the web. The auth cookie is the tracking cookie.
There's been a lot of uproar over the last few days over some changes in Chrome 69:
This post is Google's response and plans for addressing these complaints in the next version of Chrome.
While this of course good news, it's also another reminder that Chrome is not a web browser. It's a Google product that happen to include one.
