Another interesting point against using Google services: problems with any 1 service could potentially affect any number of other services tied to your account, often without reason or explanation.

Sorry, your Google Chrome account has been suspended.

Before this post I actually though that if I ever start a blog, it will be either on Blogger or on a self-hosted website. I guess there are no alternatives any more.

Static site generator (Pelican, Hugo, Jekyl, etc.) and ... just about any hosting option, including Gitlab or Github. Search and comments take some thinking, but are possible.

What do you mean? WordPress and Tumblr still exist and are more popular than Blogger.

          Tumblr

I really dislike how it looks and works. Besides, it seems to be a more picture-oriented site.

There is also LiveJournal, which is fine I guess, but I don't feel like it has a good audience.

Medium started out good with good content. The subscription model is garbage. Now it's just good content hidden behind a paywall

Medium is quite awful. There are banners on the top and bottom that stick with you as you scroll, and they rely on JavaScript to show you code snippets or (sometimes) images. Just give me an <img>...

It seems over the last few years the opinion of Google has very slowly shifted back towards neutral, I'm really curious to see where this goes, especially since I've fully entrenched myself in the Google environment over the years.
