Gruber has been saying this since the day of release. What I don't understand is why people are trying to compare technical specifications of a product generally designed for people who often don't care about technical specifications, & just want their phone to be a tool or utility. People that do care about technical specifications won't buy an iPhone XR in the first place.

If you read his review, it's obvious the 326ppi screen is fantastic:

The XR display is the brightest iPhone LCD display Apple has ever made. It looks terrific. To my eyes, the biggest difference between the XR and XS displays is the slightly larger bezel around the XR display — not the displays themselves.

Even when you do look at the technical specifications; an OLED to LCD comparison makes very little sense, especially when you're dealing with pentile panels like Samsung's; which need a higher PPI to meet Jobs' original requirements for "retina" anyway.

Anecdotally, I will say this. I never noticed the pixels in the iPhone 4, which was the last 326PPI phone I owned. I do however notice the pentile pixel patterning in my iPhone XS, which has a 458 PPI display. In fact, I think I prefer Apple's LCD's to their OLED's.

I’m reading this in Safari on a XS. If you can see some kind of pixel pattern on this phone, you’ve got incredible eyes. Even with readers on, that let me work on tiny parts daily and read absolute minuscule text (wristwatch internals), I cannot distinguish any sort of pixels or pattern.

Hell, even with a magnifying glass, it’s barely visible.

But I’ve seen the XR, and it’s a very nice LCD. Probably the best yet on a smartphone, but I can’t claim to have seen them all.

I’ll take that as a compliment! I had LASIK a few years ago, but that was for short-sightedness. I wouldn’t say I can see individual pixels; but the overall diamond cross-hatching pattern is...

I wouldn’t say I can see individual pixels; but the overall diamond cross-hatching pattern is reasonably visible if you pay attention to boundaries between lines or different colours.

How would I go about identifying OLED screens that are or aren't pentile (assuming I'm going off online information)? I don't believe that is usually listed in product page device specifications.

It's usually only on OLED screens, and even then I think it's only on Samsung's panels. If they aren't going to list it in the specs, I would check reviews from whatever source you trust most.

Haha, late-late adopter here. I like the middle of the post, where one guy is looking at the screens essentially on the edge. Yeah, that's the way I always watch videos. Maybe in 2020 I'll get one...
