    not very surprising. there have been overtures and policy changes in this general direction of making shit harder and more invasive for everybody (unless they're white and born here basically) for awhile now, and i honestly doubt this is going to be the end of it given how many facets of immigration policy the trump administration has in its crosshairs.

      You'd think that at some point someone is going to perk up and shout 4th amendment, but I guess the only screamers in the gallery are 2nd amendment advocates.

        Doesn't the 4th ammendment only apply to citizens?

          No, it actually protects citizens and non-citizens alike. And regardless, they're also requiring social media data from permanent residents and naturalized citizens

          No, it actually protects citizens and non-citizens alike.

          Rights That Protect Aliens and Citizens Alike
          The First Amendment prevents the government from censoring noncitizens’ speech or suppressing the practice of their religion. The Fourth Amendment protects them against unreasonable searches and seizures. The Fifth Amendment ensures that noncitizens’ property can only be taken by the government for a public use, and only if just compensation is paid.

          And regardless, they're also requiring social media data from permanent residents and naturalized citizens

    I feel like this tildes title is a bit... misleading. The visa requirement is bad, don't get me wrong, but I clicked on the link thinking it suddenly applied to me, too. But the permanent resident and naturalized citizen part only seems to refer to this:

    The move represents a step up from a September 2017 measure in which the Homeland Security Department proposed and enacted a regulation calling for the surveillance of social media use of all immigrants, including naturalized citizens.

    Which, while also troubling, isn't the same thing as calling up naturalized citizens and demanding their social media info. Did I miss something? (Asking seriously, would like to know if I'm going to have to remember every social media account I used the past 5 years.)

      Yes, this indeed refers to that paragraph and the links it points at: https://www.nytimes.com/2017/09/28/us/politics/immigrants-social-media-trump.html...

      Green card holders and naturalized citizens will also have their social media information collected, with the data becoming part of their immigration file. It was unclear whether the monitoring would take place only in the application process or could continue afterward.

      https://www.federalregister.gov/documents/2017/09/18/2017-19365/privacy-act-of-1974-system-of-records

      Discussing who the HSD enacted regulation (keeping social media records) refers to:

      CATEGORIES OF INDIVIDUALS COVERED BY THE SYSTEM:
      Lawful permanent residents;
      Naturalized U.S. citizens;
      ...

      I don't think they're going to call naturalized citizens and demand this information, but people going through the process right now (like me) will need to provide this information. It is unclear if this information will be kept and monitored after they become citizens, but my guess is yes. This administration is really going out of its way to strip naturalized citizens of their citizenship and this will just be another tool in their belt.

      Asking seriously, would like to know if I'm going to have to remember every social media account I used the past 5 years

      I'm on the same boat. But I think they're only referring to the big social media sites - Twitter, FB, Snapchat etc'
