    Sadly, this is basically the only way IoT companies might ever patch their devices. There are currently no real penalties for making horribly insecure devices, and unlike a DDOS botnet, the consumer will actually notice the effects of this, and manufacturers will have to process returns and repairs as a result.

    My mom's thermostat can't connect to her wifi network since it doesn't support some characters in the password (and she doesn't want to go to the trouble of changing it), but the more articles I see about IoT exploits, the more I'm glad it's too crappy to risk getting bricked and disabling the AC in the summer.

      I also think most iot for home use is overkill, but there's definitely a big opportunity in elderly care. If a home can take care of you / watch over you, people can live at home longer, instead...
