This article does that thing that annoys me where the author accepts that the systemic problem is inevitable, but their solution is to catalog and complain about the people involved and not the tool being used. IMO, If Twitter has a problem with people incentivized to take part in take part in a forever troll, the most effective solution is on Twitter to allow their users to curate their reach and experience more than allowing just anybody to whatabout and "well, actually" anybody at any given time. Creating a new wave of philosophical enlightenment just to get around the fact your favorite website is busted and anybody trying to fix their website is too cozy and coddling their users from the free speech is, to borrow a phrase, fucking bullshit, and doesn't really scale as a solution either.

Sorry for the necro, but I agree with you. I think to some extent awareness of the issue with the larger public can help in fixing the issue, because systems also evolve to adapt to their users, but a big part of the blame for the dysfunction of Twitter should lie with Twitter's design. Since Twitter introduced it's new curated timeline it's been pushing more and more conflicting opinions or "hot takes", presumably under the guise of generating "engagement". It's probably an overused reference at this point but CGP Grey's video on the effectiveness of anger as a motivator is probably a large part of why these platforms keep creating systems which feed into and even promote anger.

That's a fascinating read, and I'm really glad I'm doing so from an outpost of the CosyWeb. I'd be interested to hear about solutions to the IoB, but maybe the author is right that only a new philosophical movement will move us past the endless beefing.
