      Looking at the video linked in your article, I don't think the description of what happened matches. There's mutual battery going on, gray guy just doesn't come out very well since he's outnumbered at least three to one by assailants. We don't actually get to see the opening though, so it's unclear who decided to start getting physical first. Washington state does not view first degree (felony) theft as a reasonable defense for assault, so gray guy could potentially come out of this mess in worse shape than his assailants, since Washington's self defense clause is similar to Ohio's (my state) in that it is transitive if you are acting under the reasonable belief that someone committed a violent crime against a victim.

      Could also pan out that one of the proud boys swung first, in which case they have serious legal problems (and four of them are going to jail). Gray guy has currently filed a report with SPD accusing one of the proud boy members of brandishing during the engagement.

          It should also be mentioned that the Proud Boys are pretty serious about spreading propaganda. They famously had Andy Ngo cover the "Antifa terrorists". Do a quick Google search and you'll see...
