We need high-speed Internet now more than ever, but getting it is still going to be a real problem in many places even with Low Earth Orbit satellites, like Starlink, and 5G.

I expect that with some decent tools for understanding what's using the most data, we will find good ways to cut back without missing much.

I can't see it. For example, 8K video is finally coming to the real world, and to do it justice you need about 200Mbps.

I highly doubt 8k streaming video is going to make any significant inroads in the near future, and certainly not to the point where it's behind a push for the deployment of more broadband infrastructure. The displays are rare, the content is nonexistent, and the fidelity benefits are minimal. Even if it does become a thing, if 4k streaming video is anything to go by, it'll be locked behind arbitrary technical hurdles and compressed to all hell into like a 30Mbit stream that barely looks any better than a decent bitrate 1080p stream, rather than being done justice, as it were.

Do you even need video turned on all the time? For many decades, people would talk on the phone with their friends, having long conversations with no video at all for hours, and it was fine....

Do you even need video turned on all the time? For many decades, people would talk on the phone with their friends, having long conversations with no video at all for hours, and it was fine. Admittedly it is nice to have high definition video, but this is a luxury that could be saved for special occasions.

It’s weird to me how people seem to take pride in being unadaptable and unable to give up small luxuries. HDTV was amazing when it came out. And for us older folks, DVD quality was an impressive advance over VHS.
