As always, this thread quickly devolved into heated arguments about the exact subjects that make RMS controversial, which should be... exactly where we don't want to go.
I'm going to leave the overall topic up since I think it's important (and many significant figures are signing the open letter). Other than that, I'm just removing everything except the only comment that added some significant additional links/context, and leaving this locked.
