Inserting sensors into plants isn't new, but these new sensors may be able to be deployed more cheaply and give more information.
I had to look up precision agriculture. It's used for Site-specific crop management (SSM). From the USDA:
I advocate for people growing food in their yards, on their balconies, in their windowsills and etc. I fiercely believe in small farms. But our population is such that large scale agriculture is something we cannot do without. We need to do it in the most efficient and sustainable ways possible (currently it seems that those two things are at odds with each other). Even if the sensors in the OP never make it into production it looks like the tech is moving in the right direction.
