Tags and regional spelling?

In ~comp, there's a post about optimizing a string parser, and one of the tags is "optimisation" instead of "optimization". This makes me curious, what's the official policy for regional spelling differences in tags? Will people be encouraged to use exclusively American or British spellings, or will the search feature (when it arrives) automatically link results for both if you search for either?

This is probably a good use case for tag disambiguation much like Stack Overflow's tag synonyms. By mapping similar tags to one authoritative tag, you can allow for different spellings without fragmenting content that should actually be grouped together. A similar scenario could occur e.g. with a tag like javascript, which should match js.

I hope they go with a system like Stackoverflow where tag synonyms can be defined by users with sufficient rep.
