Where are the posting buttons?

Tags: ask.help

I've noticed in the last few days that buttons to post a new topic or comment seem to have disappeared from the site. I have to add /new_topic manually to open a post form and press Ctrl+Enter to post it.

Is it just me?

EDIT: If anyone having the same problem with Firefox, it's probably some rogue uBlock Origin filter. What helped me:

  • Go to the uBO settings.
  • Go to the "Filter lists" tab.
  • Push "Purge all caches" and then "Update now".
  • Wait for it to update.
  • Delete all caches and reload the page.

Either that, or simply disable cosmetic filtering for the site.

      Might be related with the fact that I've been posting almost every 24h in ~music sharing things I like. Maybe the software thinks I am a spammer now?

          There's rate-limiting on Tildes? This is the first I've seen of this! Do you have any further information about this?

          The current rate limiting doesn't hide the post buttons, it just shows an error when you try to submit something

              Well, I need to up my game! I've never hit this limit; I didn't even knew it existed.

              it's pretty difficult to hit the limit

              Challenge accepted! :)

              The things that can you can hit a limit with are found here with the times too.

              Thanks. Luckily, I've spent enough time working with developers (and Deimos' code is well-written enough) to be able to decipher that.

                The limits are pretty high, I set them as mostly a precaution against waking up one day to find that somebody had decided to spam thousands of posts overnight. They shouldn't really get in anyone's way with normal use.

                Right now, it'll stop you if you try to post more than 6 topics per hour or 30 comments per hour, but they don't have to be spread out over that time period - you're allowed to "burst" up to 4 topics and 20 comments. So for example, if you posted 4 topics back-to-back it wouldn't complain, but the 5th one would make you wait until (I believe) 10 minutes after the first one you posted, then 10 minutes more for the 6th, and then you'd have to wait 40 minutes for a 7th.

        i had a problem very similar to this earlier this morning where the post button on everything (and the login buttons on the front page of the website) disappeared. check your filters if you have something like noscript or ublock origin, because that's what it turned out to be for me and toggling a few things fixed it for me.

          Holy Dennis Ritchie, you are correct. If I disable uBlock Origin I get the buttons back. If I enable it, I get this in the dev console:

          Content Security Policy: The page’s settings blocked the loading of a resource at self (“script-src”). Source: try {
          (function() {
          	var target = 'blur'....

          So I guess there are two questions now:

          1. Is this uBO being overzealous, or a real potentially insecure action in the Tildes code?
          2. Why, in Alan M. Turing's name, a failure to download some JavaScript makes submit buttons and links, the essential elements of web pages since the beginning of HTML, disappear?

              It is indeed. And, the site seems to actually be working well without JS, for which I am grateful.

              I purged both the browser cache and the uBO cache and reloaded the filter lists. Seems to have fixed the issue. Thank you. I have edited the original message to include my solution.

            for the record, an easier way to fix it seems to just be to disable cosmetic filtering, which is what i did.
