Combining searches and filters

Tags: search

The lack of ability to combine search functions on Tildes is becoming more and more of a pain point for me. I can filter for one tag or search for one word, but that's it. I can't narrow the search in any way. I can't combine searches and filters and groups:

  • I can't search for a word within a group.

  • I can't search for a word within a set of topics filtered by a tag.

  • I can't filter by two separate tags at the same time.

  • I can't search for two separate words at the same time.

As Tildes is growing larger, the ability to search better is becoming more necessary.

Is there any possibility of bringing forward the work on searches so that some of these combinations can be enabled?

Thanks. Honestly, I thought these things were already on the "to do" list. I thought it was just a matter of doing them sooner rather than later.

Would any specific one of the requests you made help the most immediately? I might be able to get it in fairly easily without getting into the larger search updates.

Also, searching for two separate words should already be working. It's phrases that don't work. For example if you search for "dogs frogs" you'll get only the single topic that matches both of those.

A quick win would be the ability to search within groups. That would narrow down the search results. I didn't know we could search for two words at once. That's good to know.

Alright, I added a really basic search-inside-group for now. If you go into a specific group before searching, the search will only apply to that group instead of being site-wide. There will be a note at the top of the results saying that it's searching inside the group, and it includes a link to search the whole site instead.

Great! And based on my very quick testing, it even seems to work how I expect. Thank you!

Also, are the wiki pages searchable?

No. The current search feature looks only at topics - not comments or wiki pages.

      If not then why not?

For the same reason that lots of other things don't work around here: because that functionality hasn't been built yet. (Remember that Tildes is still in alpha testing. It's not even close to finished yet!)
