How do I get rid of the "new comment" notification?

I seem to have a persistent "1 new comment" notification in the upper right of the page, even though I've viewed that comment several times. Is there a way to mark something as read?

    click the notification and then click "mark all as read in the top left

        As a side note, once you're aware of marking the comment read manually, give it a shot for a while, you may find you appreciate that they don't automatically disappear. I know I was initially in favour of the preference to allow automatic marking but after turning it on I decided to switch back.

          Yeah, despite pointing out the settings to enable that, I actually prefer not to have them marked as read automatically either. It's really handy to be able to intentionally leave some comments as notifications so that I am reminded to reply to them when I finally have the time to do so.
