Im glad this is here and hope that Admiral Cloudberg's fascinating posts continue to be posted on Tildes. His writing is always captivating and the suspense is built in to every story. He's also a good part of the reason I dont ever plan to fly again. Sorry, Air Canada and WestJet.

I always take a very different moral from her writeups - every crash is painfully analyzed, deconstructed, and root-caused, and safeguards are put in place so that nothing like that crash can ever happen again. Flying is orders of magnitude safer than it was in the past (and, in fact, is objectively the safest way to travel in terms of deaths per passenger-mile), because of this willingness to reflect on failures, and to focus more on preventing future accidents than on finding a person to blame.

I know all the statistical reasons why flying is safer per passenger mile. But there are a couple of things that make the possibility of crashing not worth it for me. One is that if Im travelling by car and crash more than likely its just me thats going to be injured or die and maybe one other person. Ive watched plenty of car crash videos to know that they're usually very fast - a couple of seconds and its all over. But in a plane you're going to be surrounded by 100 to 200 terrified passengers who are going to be screaming their way to their death. And its not likely over in a second. Most of the mid air catastrophes take several minutes to happen, and a fall from 35,000 ft isnt going to be over quickly. The pilots could be fighting for a long time, while everyone awaits an unsure fate. No thanks. If Im gonna go I dont want it to be prolonged and I certainly dont want to be around 200 other terrified victims. Driving it is.

ps. I used to work for an airline and flew frequently. I was one of the calm ones, reassuring nervous flyers.
