I worked for an airline for a few years, in a non-flight crew job. But reading this crash history now explains one thing I experienced. On one flight I was privileged to ride in the jump seat, the temporary seat that sits behind the pilots and in front of the flight deck door in a 737, for a flight into Calgary. The pilots were very friendly and answered all my curious questions the whole way in, til we got to a certain point. Then the captain turned toward me and said, "Once we hit 10,000 ft you cant talk or say anything past that point til we're stopped at the terminal. There are no distractions allowed" in a tone that made it clear that wasn't a request. Made sense, but til today I didnt know that that was the 'sterile cockpit rule' or that it was partially brought about because of the crash that killed Stephen Colbert's father and brothers.

I recommend the Black Box Down podcast. It goes into details about why the sterile cockpit rules came about through various episodes. All the episodes are pretty much great and explain why...

September 11th also has a completely different meaning in Chile due to events the year before.

Also, you can say that an airliner flown into the ground on 9/11 killed Colbert's dad. It's just that the year was 1974. heh. Wild stuff.
