What is happening to Companion Pass qualifying points?
Starting January 1, 2027, certain activities that helped you qualify for a Companion Pass by earning Companion Pass qualifying points do not earn Tier Qualifying Points. Therefore, these activities, while still earning Rapid Rewards points, will not assist you in earning Companion Pass benefits. These include new Cardmember welcome bonuses, referral bonuses, anniversary points, and bonus points from spend (e.g., 2x on gas), as well as partner spend (e.g., hotel, car).
Southwest Companion Pass was considered to be the gold standard for flight promotions, with the Southwest personal and business cards providing enough points on welcome offers alone to be able to gain flights for a designated companion for only the required taxes (~$10 round trip) if you flew with them for the rest of the calendar year and an additional year on top of that. With this change in the loyalty program, getting that Companion Pass status is much harder next year.
