Have you watched any TV shows recently you want to discuss? Any shows you want to recommend or are hyped about? Feel free to discuss anything here.
Please just try to provide fair warning of spoilers if you can.
The Book of Boba Fett is unbelievable. Mandalorian was truly great, but this is really feeding that lust for cool characters -- niche and more popular alike.
Tonight's episode was no exception.
mild spoiler.. but not really.. but still don't click if you haven't watched
The deepfake this time around was fantastic, right? At first I thought they recast the role, since we saw the guy in another role already this series. I haven't confirmed it, but I can't imagine they found someone else for it. Apart from one or two minor glitches, the deepfake was near flawless for the technology. It got around the uncanny valley in most places, too. Pretty neat stuff.I also started Mayor of Kingston, which is just alright. I don't give a shit about any of the characters and I feel like I'm just watching one event after another... but I'll give it another episode (third) to see if I'm truly sold.
I'm also doing a good ol' fashioned S02-S09ish Simpsons rewatch. I'm not going to binge it, but I'll keep it kicking around like I do with Person of Interest.
Speaking of people of interest, I really don't like Mayim Bialik as Jeopardy host. For the first time in a long time, I've decided to simply skip the episodes where she's hosting unless the community throws up a signal that a particular episode was truly great (like 2/1) -- but otherwise, I can't do it. She improved from her first appearance and a little from her last, but she just isn't a natural for it.
Friday edit: Reacher from Amazon is pretty good. Not amazing, but an easy binge -- even if you're familiar with the book.
Netflix knows I'm a sucker for sports docs, so it recommended me the new docuseries about the soccer player Neymar. I do not recommend it. This doc was clearly vetted by Neymar's management team, and feels like an advertisement. There's very little criticism[1], and some high profile interviewees talk so little that I can only assume they edited all the "bad" parts out. Which is a shame, because he clearly has a very interesting story.
[1] they do show negative aspects, but they're always followed by an extremely favorable defense of Neymar...
I saw a couple of episodes of The Woman in the House Across the Street from the Girl in the Window. The reviews are pretty bad. But I thought, eh whatever.
It’s a parody of female-centric thrillers. Most prominently The Woman in the Window (the long-delayed dumped on Netflix movie with Amy Adams).
But here’s the biggest problem with this parody. It’s not doing anything to make fun of the tropes of this genre. It’s just doing the tropes, mostly straight-faced, with maybe a joke here and there. But the tone isn’t what it should be, it should be a lot sillier than it is. The comedic moments just aren’t very funny and Kristen Bell is mostly phoning it in.
There are funnier moments in Gone Girl than in this.
I started watching Somebody Somewhere today and the first episode was just great. It got me teary eyed a bit. Despite my reaction to it, it's definitely not a downer though. I can only make so many inferences after having seen a single episode, but it looks like a show right up my alley -- treading the line between funny and sad expertly without shying away from realities of every day life. Highly recommend it if that's your thing.
I haven't seen this one yet, but on the most recent The Watch podcast the hosts gushed over a show called Abbott Elementary. It seemed intriguing and looking forward to checking that out.
