John Wick is good because it involves a bunch of very dedicated stunt choreographers and at least Keanu genuinely trains with firearms in real life as a hobby. So the fighting and gun play is top notch. You were never meant to look too closely at the lore, because every second person on the street is an assassin working with a secret currency and code of conduct, it’s purposefully silly, which made the films good. Or maybe it wasn’t purposeful but the films never took itself too seriously so it came off that way. (Good thing).
This series just rides on “member how cool winston was in the films” which I don’t think is a strong enough anchor.
If they really lean into weird characters it could work, it felt a bit Tarantino in that regard, in the trailer, but not quite committed enough to make me care.
Charon was cool, Winston wasn't particularly active or even concerned with what was happening. In the lore, he's an important character because he's the manager of a Continental, but in the movies...

Charon was cool, Winston wasn't particularly active or even concerned with what was happening. In the lore, he's an important character because he's the manager of a Continental, but in the movies he's just one of Wick's frenemies. And I agree with you on the lore: it's incredibly dumb; super wide, but barely an inch deep. And if you look too closely you lose your suspension of disbelief (which is already quite low)
Synopsis: The three-part event will explore the origin behind the iconic hotel-for-assassins centerpiece of the John Wick universe through the eyes and actions of a young Winston Scott, as he’s dragged into the Hell-scape of 1970’s New York City to face a past he thought he’d left behind. Winston charts a deadly course through the hotel’s mysterious underworld in a harrowing attempt to seize the hotel where he will eventually take his future throne.

I sure hope it was, else this scene was on accident i.e. incompetence.
