I've never really seen anything from Gillis other than reading that New Yorker article about him from last year and also the whole SNL thing that happened back in 2019.
I thought this special was hilarious. Just reading stuff about Gillis you'd get the feeling he's like Milo Yiannopoulos or Ben Shapiro or something, when he's really more like Dave Chappelle (who he has opened for recently) or Louis CK. Someone who's generally liberal but doesn't really care for political correctness. He has the sensibilities of a comic from the early 00s.
Turns out his SNL firing was a blessing in disguise considering all the acclaim he now gets and how he's able to sell out theaters. He's perhaps the most respected comic at the moment among his peers as the article states:
the comic Jerrod Carmichael, who came out as gay in his last special, called him one of the few truly funny comics working today. “His material still feels dangerous,” he said.
Even this article, which is basically a critique of Gillis, doesn't feel as bad as pieces published about him in other circles. It even compliments him a little bit. So it looks like he's starting to get some mainstream acceptance from the press too.
His new Netflix special was the first ive seen from him as well. I thought the "early onset Republican" bit was one of the funniest standup bits I've seen in a long time. Probably because I know...
