I'm not sure I can aptly praise the new Doctor Who. I seldom fall in love with a character, and never that quickly. The fifteenth Doctor is absolutely fabulous. What a performance by Ncuti Gatwa. The character's wardrobe, mustache, and mannerisms are definitely from the 1960s. This is a young Doctor and kind of a young soul. He is flashy, athletic, sensitive, and a great dancer and singer. The sidekick Ruby Sunday, played by Millie Gibson, is beautiful and endearing, serving as the audience's counterpart, guiding our sense of wonder.

I'm told that this series is meant to reintroduce the Doctor to newer audiences, and it really feels that they're slowly reintroducing the lore. It's a good time to jump in!

    The first episode is insane.

    spoilers for the first episode

Highlights: a flying boat fueled by "rope-physics" (yes, actual rope), baby-eating goblins, a goblin cabaret, Jabba the Hutt on steroids, and the beginnings of a paradox that might be inspired by All You Zombies. Also, Ruby clearly has the hots for the Doctor, but it's unclear where that may go. NO SPOILERS.

Its time again for a LOST rewatch! I'm doing one episode per day on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday -- but multiples when its a two or three parter. If I stick to this plan, I will finish on December 11th.

Sugar is Colin Farrell as a classic private detective. This has every trope from the old Marlowe, etc, but modernized and twisted a bit, if that makes any sense. It's great. They also cut in quick clips from old movies.

Mayor of Kingstown is back and I've given up on it. It isn't a bad show, but I think they're in the same spot as Resident Alien where their story is going in circles... and they don't know how to write out of it.

Smiling Friends is a perfect ten minute cartoon that everybody should be watching.

The Acolyte starts tonight and should be good. Also, 30-for-30 is covering the post-Stanley Cup loss in 2011 for Vancouver with 'I'm Just Here for the Riot'.

Lastly, is anybody watching Top Chef? They've nailed the format. Padma Lakshmi is out and season 10 winner Kristen Kish is now hosting. Padma was great, but Kish brings a lot to the table, especially being a former contestant.

A few rule changes this year:

    • the main show takes the quickfires into consideration for the elimination
    • no immunity from quickfires, instead the previous elimination winner gets immunity
    • they can kick out up two people!

With Last Chance Kitchen, the first guy who was eliminated left the show so they brought in the alternate but introduced him via Last Chance Kitchen, which was an excellent twist. I hope they do this every year. LCK was split into two parts, with someone entering the main competition each time.

Finally, there's The Dish with Kish, where Kristen Kish has a Top Chef alum on to essentially do the elimination challenge or a part of it.. or even to do a good version of the losing dish. Great shows all free on the Bravo site.

It's really neat to see how many Top Chef contestants went in to work on the show itself.

I've been binge-watching Silicon Valley, and I always put it aside. But it's hilarious; I'm worried that I will finish it so quickly that I'll get withdrawal.

    The Acolyte

Just finished the first episode and I was honestly ready to write it off because of the very first scene:

    Spoiler for episode 1

A seasoned, trained-for-years Jedi falls for diversionary attacks twice in the same fight. The first time, is the viewer really supposed to believe that she has no peripheral vision? And the second time, just.. how in the hell does she fall for that?

The rest of the episode was better, but it's still not a great show - it has a chance of becoming decent or maybe even good, because the potential is there. I'm gonna keep watching but it seems like Star Wars is continuing the unfortunate trend that they just can't get their shows quite right (with one or two exceptions).
