snl did always feel like it needed to appeal to a broad audience to keep the advertising flowing in. Other shows like In Living Color, The State, MadTV or Kids in the Hall certainly had more of a "we don't care if you like our show or not, this is good stuff" vibe.
I always thought MadTV was a better sketch show than snl but they never had the budget snl had. I miss that show.
