[SOLVED] Anyone know of a site that tracks if a series is "done"?

Done in quotes because sometimes shows get cancelled or otherwise abandoned and other times it has a final season or only had one season and was properly finished. Either way, same result.

I don't have the patience or time to keep track of what series is having what new season come out at what point. I prefer to just wait for it all to be done and then watch in my own time. Even if it is one of the very few series I watch that isn't "done" I still don't do the weekly episode thing. I just wait for it all to come out and then watch as I please.

That said, I have a backlog of series that are on my to-watch list, either suggested by friends or I saw a trailer that looked good, but they sit there at present because there's so much utter shit SEO spam websites that you can't get a clear answer if a new season is coming or a series is done or not.

TheTVDB is an online database of TV and movies. You can think of it sort of like IMDb, but without the corporate influence, and with a functioning API. The site tracks a show's "status", if the show is expected to get more episodes.

    For example:

    • Breaking Bad shows Status: Ended, since the show is not expected to get any more episodes
    • Ruri Rocks shows Status: Continuing, as it's currently airing, with episode 2 releasing next Sunday
    • The Rookie also shows Status: Continuing, even though it finished its last season, because the show hasn't been cancelled and is expected to get another season
    • Akira shows Status: Upcoming, as it's releasing in the non-immediate future

Note that, because available information is imperfect (and creators'/studios' decisions change), the status might change from Ended back to Continuing, e.x. Cyberpunk: Edgerunners was set to Ended for two years, then suddenly a new season was announced a few days ago, so it's back to Continuing.

Importantly, TheTVDB is the backing database for many people's automated media libraries (via a tool called Sonarr), which means a large populace of nerds who like updating databases (hi!) are very invested in keeping it up to date and accurate.

I'll usually watch a season at a time because after a year or two it's 50/50 whether the show will continue to be available on the streaming platforms that I have access to.

But I will use Wikipedia which will very often have a table of the future episode release dates and I'll add a calendar event to remind me a couple days after the last episode will finish airing.

Yeah, I've used Wikipedia to check previously, but it's not extremely reliable with a lot of series and it's a bit of a pain to go digging through it and then find it's outdated.

JustWatch.com is an excellent site for "where is this movie/series actually available." It doesn't seem to provide the exact specific thing you're looking for but it does let you see when the last episodes were made and for example using Fallout - it shows there are Season 2 episodes coming.

The site is useful since I can tell it what services I have and that I'm in the US rather than hoping whatever Google picks up is correct and localized. You can also make a watchlist which might help with the tracking?

even if you arent pirating stuff, Sonarr makes for an excellent TV tracker. It pulls from theTVDB and will give you a calendar, status, and more. Really handy.

I'm exactly like you and I like to use TVmaze for this. It's not as complete as the other sites, but it feels less corporate and more community-y.
