By all counts this show should not work as an adaptation but both season 1 and this trailer show that they know what makes the story tick. It's one of the few shows that manages to lean into the camp and make it feel charming instead of over the top.. which frankly it still is, but the good kind! I mean the dude has two cigars! That's stupid. But it's great!
I've seen a good chunk of One Piece but got totally burned out on the pace of the show that even OnePace couldn't fix the lethargy, but the absolute best part of the show was the beginning and the start of the Grand Line. It embodies the feeling of adventure so well and it was so well balanced against the action-y parts that it always seemed to be moving forwards to new danger and surprise.
I'm happy to see the adaptation do well and receive so much praise, because it's probably extremely difficult to pull off. Let's hope they can continue the momentum in S2, this short trailer indicates that they just might do it.

There's a new anime adaptation that's currently being worked on called The One Piece. snip. It will be made by Wit Studio (Attack on Titan, Vinland Saga, Spy Family, etc). They released this behind the scene video: 『THE ONE PIECE』 Behind The Scenes of Production. I have high hope for that adaptation.
They'll be remaking the whole thing from the start and it's supposed to be seasonal instead of every week.

They also confirm season 3 at the same time.
