TV Tuesdays Free Talk
Have you watched any TV shows recently you want to discuss? Any shows you want to recommend or are hyped about? Feel free to discuss anything here.
Please just try to provide fair warning of spoilers if you can.
Pluribus has kicked off with two really promising episodes. This is the latest offering from Vince Gilligan (Breaking Bad, Better Call Saul) and stars Rhea Seehorn.
Apple doesn't put out a lot, but they're fairly consistent with quality. This is a great partnership.
I spent the last 7 months rewatching Mad Men. It's incredible how well it holds up. I'm not the biggest fan of the end (the final 2 episodes in particular) but it's still a solid ending. Everything was tied up too nearly, I think? I'm struck by how much better it held up compared to my last series rewatch: The Sopranos. I gave up trying to finish that one towards the beginning of the 6th season.
If I had to put one element at the top of the list of what decided me to abandon The Sopranos vs finishing Mad Men it would be casting. Mad Men was damn near immaculate in it's choices top to bottom (fucking Glen, lol) whereas, 20+ years later, The Sopranos seems very top heavy. Storylines involving less prominent characters just aren't carried as well.
Next I'm dusting off my DVDs to watch it in is original broadcast aspect ratio: The Wire!
Love the Wire, named my dog Toni (Soprano) and my next dog will be a reddish Labrador named Joan(ie) after Joan in Mad Men
It was filmed widescreen and cropped for TV -- so having it WS isn't a perversion like Seinfeld or M*A*S*H.
Have you gone through the commentary tracks? They're some of the best for television.
First 2 seasons were shot 4 perf and the original camera negative full frame 4:3 aspect ratio was used for broadcast while the last 3 seasons were shot 3 perf which is closer to the 16:9 aspect ratio of today's widescreen TV. When composing the shots some additional 'safety' margins framed the actual broadcast image, but the first 2 seasons do get cropped to produce a widescreen image while the last 3 have additional side information that can be used.
However, I watched the show during it's original broadcast and that was 4:3. My preference is to rewatch the show the way I originally experienced it.
It's been a while since I watched the DVDs. I remember watching the documentaries but I might not have listened to the commentary tracks. I'll look into it.
what a perfect show. its tough not to do a rewatch every time its mentioned. I've watched it about every other year since it came out. The commentary tracks has so much more variety compared to other series (e.g. mad men) -- some are Simon solo, with writers, directors, etc, and others are just the cast. Really well done.
I dont think they cropped for S01 tho -- https://imgur.com/a/XUzI4
I've thought about editing out the one and only flashback to Gant. They were forced to put it in, but it really just doesn't belong.
I have rewatched the entirety of Third Watch, a show I only sporadically watched when I was a kid. What an absolute treat. The main cast is superb, but my favorite will always be Bosco.
