Voltron: Legendary Defender - Shiro and Adam
I don't have a long write up for this or anything, mostly because I'm just confused...
I have to admit, watching season 7, I don't remember Adam if he was ever brought in before, and his part was so short and seemingly inconsequential, I honestly have no strong feelings for it. Shiro is all about burying his feelings and putting the needs of others above his own, so it's not at all out of character for his personal life to basically never show up. Still, we're finally getting more of his backstory, and I can't help but feel it's lacking.
So, I guess my question is - why? Why bring in a character they're not going to develop and kill off screen? Would it be better just to have a random mention of Shiro being gay and just moving on, which I guess is pretty much all that happened anyways? Guess they could have done it as part of his backstory with Keith. Does this count as queer-baiting?
Thoughts?
Correction: guess he didn't die off screen. I just didn't recognize the random pilot as Adam...
I finished the season 7 just yesterday and honestly don't have a paragon with the classic series (I was too young and in Italy the mega-robots series were highly edited to the point of being completely changed in theme and story, thanks to general bigotry).
Keeping that in mind, the series is definitely enjoyable imho, I remember it being a little slow a couple of season ago (4-5 maybe, I could be mistaken) but last and this season definitely picked up the pace and general mood.
About Adam, I also felt it was kinda thrown in and I'm afraid that the obvious reason is that the series will ends with the next season and lots of things that could/should have been fleshed out, are being thrown down quickly.
It's kind of a shame really but I have good hopes for the final season anyway :)
I did watch the older one, but I was really young, so I sort of remember Shiro dying, but Keith's the main leader in my mind. I do honestly really enjoy this reboot. And though I was a little disappointed how quickly they tied up the Lotor line in season 6, I was still excited for season 7.
I just finished season 7 yesterday too, and found it mostly really boring. And this is really hand-wavy, but I found it kind of "token-ish" in a few parts, namely 1) Shiro and Adam, 2) Zethrid and Ezor, and 3) Veronica being questioned by cadets on the supply retrieval mission.
That's honestly the impression I got too, so I know I asked if it's queerbaiting, but I don't really think it is. It's really rushed. They did some good flashbacks with Shiro and Keith, so maybe a hint of Adam being present in some of those, might have helped a bit too.
What how much this behaviour is being widespread, it was a fair question. But yeah, as I said, it feel more like they had plans but had to cut things short due to the episodes agreement being too close to the ending.
It's a shame, really, because imho the show had good potential to review the agreed episodes and go for more. If things stay as they are, netflix probably don't have any plan of keep investing in it.
I agree with you that it had it's high and low as a series but I feel like it's an ok/good product and my kids loved it. Everything that helps me have bonds between my childhood and my kid's is always welcome if done at least decently :)
I do still really like it too. I hope it ends on a high note!
If they didn't hype up Adam at Comic-Con it would've been fine. If they had just not showed him again after the initial scene the backlash probably would've been smaller. But them hyping up this new character, barely developing him, and then just killing him felt like he only existed for marketing. Honestly, I feel like DreamWorks probably interfered with the storyline somehow, and Adam was supposed to be more significant, because this character arc was just so suddenly cut short.
I don't really follow Comic-Con news, so didn't hear anything about that. That does make it very "queerbaity" though, if they're marketing it.
I can see that, and that'll be so sad. And I agree with you on if he was just in the flashback bit, since mini glimpses into the characters are fine. It just seemed so out of place to have him exist in the present, but not interact with Shiro, but we are still showed his death.
