Well, I suppose all the reactionary backlash to the casting call for Ciri suggesting she may be played minority actress either was unwarranted or was unfortunately effective as Ciri is in fact being played by a white person.
According to a recently found casting notice (not publicly accessible), Netflix’s Witcher series is looking for “a 16 or 15 year old BAME (black, Asian, minority ethnic) girl who can play down to 13/14.”
Due to this announcement, /r/witcher freaked out about this with dozens of threads, along with multiple threads posted on /r/television and /r/kotakuinaction, as well as your typical alt-lite Twitterbros and 4chan, all claiming that the SJWs were taking their television shows and diversity is ruining western civilization.
The backlash was so bad that the showrunner was forced to quit Twitter due to the harassment she was receiving.
I’d wager the backlash was unwarranted more than effective If I was a gambling man, which I’m not, I’d bet Netflix’s Witcher series is going to rely more on GoT transplants for the bulk of its...

If I was a gambling man, which I’m not, I’d bet Netflix’s Witcher series is going to rely more on GoT transplants for the bulk of its audience rather than Witcher enthusiasts. Since GoT is ending after this upcoming 8th season and there’s nothing on TV that really has really has the same feel, Netflix is probably gambling they can capture a big portion of that fan base with an aesthetically similar show
So I can’t see the backlash really affecting their casting choice that much since most of their targeted audience probably won’t know who Ciri is to begin with
I see you're point, but depending on advertising, having Ciri be a non-white ethnicity would have little bearing on scooping up the Game of Thrones audience. The lead is certainly going to be...
I see you're point, but depending on advertising, having Ciri be a non-white ethnicity would have little bearing on scooping up the Game of Thrones audience. The lead is certainly going to be Cavill as Geralt, regardless of what the casting call said. There's no way he can't be, and that gives them their Jon Snow/Ned Stark analog. It's not like Game of Thrones wasn't diverse either. Sure, it was mostly European, but they had a decent share of ethnic characters as well.
I think the backlash must have factored into it somehow, either due to concern about losing their other built-in audience, the people who played the game, or concern about controversy hampering their chance to pick up the Game of Thrones crowd.
I am so excited for this show, both of them seem like great picks for their roles. I am a pretty big advocate of the /r/patientgamers lifestyle, I am just now starting Wild Hunt and am in love...

Uugh, I have all three and it's on my to-do list as well. Sounds like we have little over a year to get through them before the show drops. Wish I had more time in the week or less good games to play.
