Can I say "meh"? Is "meh" a valid rating? All the pieces seemed to be in place for a solid episode of 'Doctor Who', but... it just fell flat for me. It wasn't horrible, it wasn't the worst episode...

All the pieces seemed to be in place for a solid episode of 'Doctor Who', but... it just fell flat for me. It wasn't horrible, it wasn't the worst episode ever made (maybe not even the worst episode this season), but it didn't appeal to me.

Maybe it was the fact that it was so well packaged? It was so obviously a teaching moment, and the supporting characters were obviously there to demonstrate stereotypes: the optimist looking forward, the pessimist scared of change, the determined bride-to-be. It was a bit too artificial, and didn't feel real. The episode is set against the backdrop of a major event in Indian history, and we didn't see any of it. And it didn't work as a love story, either, because the bride and groom were stereotypes rather than real people. Even the betraying brother didn't seem to have any depth to him.

And the aliens were obviously there just so that the show could tick the "sci fi" box. They served no purpose whatsoever.

I think this was a wasted opportunity.
