A whole library of detailed, fan-written scripts that the author has been releasing regularly for almost exactly a year - although I only came across them recently as a particularly strong example in the "how come random internet commenters can manage better than the actual writers?" discussion that's been spurred by the way the actual season played out.
I feel like the budget wasn't even the issue. Sure, plenty of fans are plotting big battles without considering that, but there are other ways. I think the army of the dead would have been just...
I feel like the budget wasn't even the issue. Sure, plenty of fans are plotting big battles without considering that, but there are other ways. I think the army of the dead would have been just fine as numerous small encounters with a very strong horror theme, like we saw in S8E1 at the end. That'd be engaging, terrifying, raise the stakes, and avoid the need for multiple large battles that cost a fortune to film. Budgets are limiting, but they don't have to be an excuse for poor quality. Of course, this sort of slow burn/buildup for the dead would have been best done over multiple seasons rather than crammed into 1-2 episodes.
