The Virtues is the type of drama that the UK does best. It's a difficult watch. The viewer is made to feel deeply uncomfortable. There's no heroes or villians, everything is a bit too complex for that. Shane Meadows's work feels important, especially because it documents the life of people who are mostly poor, which is something that most UK drama avoids.
