I don't know if anybody here remembers Spielberg's War of the Worlds (2005) with Tom Cruise. The movie was heavy with 9/11 symbolism, and came out around the time Tom Cruise jumped on Oprah's couch, so in my memory it had a rather cold reception. Just checked Rotten Tomatoes though and it seems it actually did pretty well so maybe my recollection's failing me. Regardless I did like that movie quite a bit at the time. Haven't seen it since then, now I'm wondering if it still holds up after 14 years.

The start of that sentence made me think you were going to reference something like The Tripods, not a 2005 blockbuster. :-) https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0086818/

Ha, well this is one concept that's been hashed and rehashed a million times over since H.G. Wells published the original 122 years ago. The Tom Cruise movie's anything but obscure, but pop culture older than a decade tends to be considered ancient history on much of the internet.

That would be hilarious. Wells truly was ahead of his time!

he narrator literally says "What the Martians did to us really sucked but it basically is what we did to the Africans so maybe we had it coming."

That would be hilarious. Wells truly was ahead of his time!
