Interesting. I thought the original series started out pretty decent, then just kind of got stuck in a rut after about season 3 or 4. My spouse read the books, so we watched the whole thing, but I didn't think the final seasons were very good. They'd have to make it much more interesting for me to watch a new series.

I didn’t read the books either but have similar thoughts about the season quality. From my non-reader perspective, it feels like they could have done a lot more with the southern gothic setting, particularly if they made things a bit darker vs the southern debutantes with vampires direction the show seemed to trend in.

This was 10 years ago however so I could be mis-remembering.

I thought the TV series did an amazing job at filling in around the edges. Where it went off the rails is where it deviated from the books, IMO. And it sounds like about the same time that you starting to think it was stuck in a rut.

IIRC, there was a jaguar(were) lawyer from New Orleans in the book, but the series went a completely different direction just before that. So disappointing.

It finished up in 2014, and declined considerably after the first few seasons. Why does this need a reboot? Who is asking for it? I assume no one, but there is likely money to be made so...

I think this is a symptom of the new management that took over a year or two ago. I remember there being concerns that they were going to try milking their cash cows dry and stop most original production. It looks like this is the start of it. I'm sure we'll see spinoffs of Game of Thrones and other popular titles, too.
