Either way, I'm excited for this. Although it doesn't quite scream 'Blade Runner' and I was more expecting (hoping) this to be in the style of the short that came out before BR2049 this could still be rather decent.

p.s. I'm not too keen on 3D animation based anime, but I love love love the Blade Runner universe, so despite that minor issue I am still excited for this as well . :P

I was with you, until I saw the latest Resident Evil and the latest Pacific Rim animes, those are possibly the most beautiful works of 'animation' I have ever seen. The character models in Pacific Rim are a bit off, but they grow on you.

P.S. Blade Runner is probably one of the most important movies in my life and I watch it on a near constant loop, my entire life has been dictated by that film in one way or another it feels and I will take any thing that involves the universe. One more thing: be sure to read the comics, they are exceptionally well done!

Hmm, I will have to check out the new Resident Evil and Pacific Rim animes then... because every 3D anime I have seen thus far has been a bit of a travesty; IMO, they all would have been so much better if traditionally animated, and even when any 3D is incorporated into 2D animation it usually totally breaks my immersion too, which is incredibly annoying.

I haven't watched Blade Runner on loop, but I rewatch the Final Cut at least once every few years, used to do the same with the Director's Cut, the old Westwood video game is one of my favourite P&C adventure games (I still have my original four CD box set), and PKD's Do Androids Dream is one of my favourite novels by one of my all-time favourite authors. I didn't know about the comics though, so I will definitely be checking those out now too.

Thanks for all the recommendations. :P

I think a distinction must be made here. There are CGI anime that try to emulate traditional animation, those always look like crap. There are anime with 2D characters and lots of 3D backgrounds, machines, etc. Those sometimes look like crap. And there is 3D animation made in Japan that we call anime because it comes from Japan, but looks nothing like what we generally call anime. Those often look great. But I'd rather call them something other than anime.

I agree that the distinction between the types of 3D animation is one worth making, but still disagree about them sometimes/often looking great. Even the ones I have seen that incorporated 3D into 2D well have still failed to make the incorporation seamless enough for me not to notice, which often completely takes me out of the moment. It kinda reminds me of the old Loonie Tunes shows, where the distinction between the matte painting and animated parts was so readily apparent that you could always tell which solid objects were about to be interacted with by the characters. It's thankfully not quite that bad anymore, but for some reason my brain still notices those minor discrepancies and it drives me nuts.

And even the best fully 3D anime I have seen so far (E.g. Captain Harlock & Appleseed Alpha) still would have been far better had they been traditionally animated, IMO. The hard-surface 3D models and still moments can be incredible looking, but the actually animated parts almost always feel very unnatural to me compared to 2D, especially when it comes to character body and facial animation.

p.s. While not an anime, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse is as close as I have ever seen fully 3D get to 2D in terms of natural looking, fluid, properly weighted, and dynamic character movement and facial animation. Which is kinda ironic considering the framerate shenanigans they used in the movie.

I do like CG for mechanical things. They work pretty well for something like Rebuild of Evangelion. I still like the old-school better, but for all those beautifully nonsensical Nerve gadgets, mechas and whatnot 3D graphics are quite suitable.

That said, I prefer regular 2D animation in all cases as well.

I get some kind of Battle Angel Alita vibe from this. A woman with amnesia that knows Panzer Kunst? Haha

Major Alita vibes all throughout. No doubt about that, not a bad thing, but an interesting move.
