Joe vs Elan School was one that sucked me right in. I believe he said he is shooting for 100 chapters, so it’s nearing its end.

This is our first season in the southwest (zone 8b). It’s been a bit of a struggle. We bought a house with 4 raised beds so we planted in two of them but a pack rat came along and ate/stole most of it. It literally stole two medium tomato plants.

So I built two elevated beds and wrapped the legs in metal so it couldn’t climb up, which has been working so far. This weekend I planted the second bed with zucchini, squash, and new tomato plants. The other bed we added onions, and we have broccoli and pepper plants. Our peppers are really struggling. Only one out of 7 plants is producing any fruit. The others don’t seem to be pollinating, they will produce flowers but never turn to fruit. We added some hanging flowers and added marigolds into the beds this past weekend also to try and attract more pollinators.

Despite the challenges, I still enjoy watching everything grow and change.

I’ve also seen them 5x, but I’m super jealous you got to see them with Bowie. Definitely the best live experience(s) I’ve had.

I believe my first languages were C and C++ in high school. C was first in 10th grade in a programming class, then I took C++ as part of AP CS. I moved on to Java and more C++ in undergrad. After graduating, I worked as a network engineer for about 15 years, so I picked up Perl at the time to help automate command line stuff and integrate with some SDKs for vendor platforms. From there I taught myself PHP as my first web dev language with some Javascript. PHP support was non existent in our company and I didn’t like it much so my next web dev language was Ruby (on rails). Eventually I was one of two people in our team that knew RoR so we converted the app we built over to Python/Django.

I left networking and I’m now a full time software engineer where we primarily use Java/Spring for our web apps/APIs. We contribute to one app internally that uses Ruby on Rails/JavaScript. I still also use Python but more for scripting/automation than a web framework these days. And not really a programming language, but we also use Terraform pretty heavily too.

I guess one piece of advice is that the more languages you learn, the easier it is to pick up a new one. Same goes for frameworks (Spring, Rails, Django, etc). I’ve never used Pyramid (the Python framework Tildes uses) but I’ve been able to look at the code and understand where to look for things by drawing similarities to other frameworks.

Good point. We don’t have any home automation system in place yet so we are flexible in that regard, but at the same time I don’t want to be vendor locked either

Sweet, thank you. I like that they come in kits, it would take me too many trips to/from the hardware store if I was trying to figure it all out from scratch.

Anyone using a drip irrigation system they can recommend? This would be for watering veggies (and possibly flowers in the future) in raised beds. These are some of the things I’m looking for but I’m getting a bit overwhelmed with all the choices out there:

    • network capability, whether that be an app (iPhone) or website I can look at stats and control from
    • 2 different garden beds to start with (3’ x 8’), with possibly 2 more in the future
    • drip is the only irrigation I’m really concerned with so no need for sprinklers or anything (I don’t think, at least)
    • there is only one spigot available for the area the beds are in

I don’t 😂 But seriously the shelf has only been up a few weeks so far so I haven’t needed to yet. I probably will use a compressed air duster and handheld vacuum?

I built a shelf to display them. It’s a built in/floating shelf about 8 feet off the ground so the cats (hopefully) can’t get to it (so glad we have 10ft ceilings here).

I’m learning how to fish for trout in streams and will probably take this opportunity to finally try out fly fishing soon.

I think you’re right. I deleted my account yesterday. It was a weird feeling letting go of fake internet points but I really didn’t have anything of value that needed to be preserved there anyways. The only thing I ever went back in my own history was looking at a flair in r/stopsmoking to figure out when I quit.

In deleting my roughly 10 pages of comments/posts, I also realized I was not very active there either, I was mostly a lurker/doom scroll. Tildes has scratched an itch of a positive, ad free space that feels like the early internet and I’m happy to donate/pay to experience this
