I've never watched the older stuff, so I don't have any idea what that's like, but I was under the impression that @arghdos was referring to the 2003 miniseries, which serves as an introduction to the 2004 series. It's a little bit annoying in that aspect because if you haven't seen the miniseries the first few episodes make zero sense. I didn't know there was a 1980 miniseries so you'll have to check with him to see what he meant.

Yeah the expanse was the show that was saved, a lot of that was due to the fact that Jeff Bezos was a fan of the show (I think), which definitely helped. I'm not in the US so I couldn't help about that there, I think we bought the box set years ago in a garage sale, so maybe sombody in the US can give help there?

And honestly, considering how much I supposedly love sci-fi, I haven't heard of Babylon 5, I've never watched the star wars films (I can't stand the acting), and I've only seen a few star trek things, but I'm by no means a true fan of star trek.

So to answer your question, no from where I'm coming from I don't see BSG as cheesy, I love the actors in it, and I think they did an amazing job. I've always thought that The Expanse falls slightly more into the cheesy section than BSG does, but that could easily be different aspects of it like the colourful lighting, and the fact that it doesn't seem to tackle as dark themes as BSG. If you haven't seen much sci-fi you probably won't have seen Ender's Game, but the expanse reminds me of a weird mix of Ender's game, Firefly (also a great sci-fi show), and BSG. Basically what I'm trying to say is that even though I love sci-fi I've never really seen mainstream sci-fi stuff so I couldn't really fit it into the rest of the genre. I've gone off on a tangent, so I'll stop here, but yeah in my opinion Battlestar Galactica is a great show that takes itself quite seriously and I don't see it as cheesy at all.

I 100% agree about the expanse, I started watching it when series 4 was almost cancelled and am now eagerly awaiting its arrival. However, I can't agree with you about the ending of BSG, I think there were problems, but my biggest problem was with the last 5 minutes of the show, just because I didn't feel it was in line with the rest of the show in a few aspects that I can't really explain. I loved the plot to the end, especially picking up towards the end of series three, and I loved the characters even past the end. For me the journey was good enough to overlook the ending, but I'm also wary of over-praising it (which I probably have done here lol) so I'd say take @arghdos's advice in regards to the show as well

I like your list, I've not even heard of plenty of the shows on there, I'm not really a TV show person, I prefer films. But the stuff that you had on there that I've seen I agree with your ratings l, but I was sad to find the list doesn't have my favorite show in the entire world: Battlestar Galactica (miniseries starts 2003 and the actual show starts 2004, which is important because this is a remake of a much older show).

WARNING: EXPOSITINAL SPOILERS AHEAD: this doesn't contain any information beyond the first couple episodes but if you want to go into the show knowing absolutely nothing, read no further.

Battlestar Galactica is set in a world really similar to ours, but more technologically advanced. The people of this world invented robots called Cylons to do their dirty work, but the Cylons rebel and leave the planet for another one. Nothing is heard of them for 60ish years, but in the beginning of the show their back... And they have a plan...

The show is brilliant, and that's not just because I love sci-fi. The storyline is fantastic, the characters are well thought out, and I personally really like the visuals. No show has made me care more about the characters and get more invested in the plot than this show. It's quite slow to start but when it picks up it takes you on a journey that you'll never want to end. Well maybe that was just me, but seriously, I love this show so much. I noticed that your list doesn't contain a whole lot of Sci-fi, but this is unmissable, and it's also structured deliberately as a human drama, if aliens put you off. So yeah, give this show a shot when you have time, although considering the length of your list I'm not sure you'll have all that much :/

Best of luck in your TV show adventures!

That's funny to me, because I would say the exact opposite. When I read the book as a kid in school I was absolutely heartbroken and felt that post book depression for days, the kind that makes you feel hopelessly sad. So I was super excited when I found out there was a film, and watched it with my sister, giving it a very high recommendation. We got to the end and were in total disbelief on how rubbish it was, and how it completely missed the spirt of the book. My sister wouldn't read the book because of how much she hated the film, but I'm glad sombody enjoyed it, because that film was the biggest disappointment of my childhood.

Maybe I've misunderstood your response, but to me this seems to raise another issue. In the future when subgroups have subgroups, is it ever possible that we end up with ~music.rock.thebeatles ?...

Maybe I've misunderstood your response, but to me this seems to raise another issue. In the future when subgroups have subgroups, is it ever possible that we end up with ~music.rock.thebeatles ? If so, what would I do if I had no desire to see any content from ~music.rock exept thebeatles? Is there a way to stay subscribed to ~music.rock.thebeatles but not ~music.rock ? Should there be a way?

Oh yeah, I totally agree with you that the gravity is quite good. I really appreciate the lengths they go to make the gravity seem real. Like you said, I'd much rather have an attempt at no gravity than just the cheap artificial gravity that's usually used, but sometimes it can be a little distracting. For example, even when they have their boots on, their arms and hair should be floating. Their hair is obviously fashioned in a way that it won't really matter if they're free-floating or not, but sometimes I feel a little distracted by the mix of gravity and weightlessness. That's why I put it into the same category as Holden's slight over-moodyness, there's nothing really wrong with it, but occasionally it breaks the story. Maybe that's just me though.

Thanks for the suggestion of the books. I knew it was based off books, but I didn't know if they were any good. I'm a bit busy right now but I'll definitely keep my eye out for them :)

Ok, so I'm relatively new here on tildes, so I'm not even sure if I'm posting this in the right place, and if I am, I apologize. One of the things that I've noticed about tildes is that it doesn't have a search bar. I've looked through some posts but can't seem to find anything about it (it was made difficult by the lack of the search bar :P), so I'm wondering is there a reason we don't have one, have we not gotten round to getting one yet or do we just not want one? What are your thoughts on a search bar?

I definitely wish they went more into the background, history, and political side of things, that's what really interests me. Two things annoy me about the show though. First is the fact that the gravity situation is entirely inconsistent, and the second is that I don't think we saw James Holden even once be happy and not moody haha. But more seriously, it's a really good show if you're into sci-fi. The only sci-fi show I recommend more is Battlestar Galactica, which is absolutely amazing. It's a lot like The Expanse but less colourful, darker, and quite ominous. 10/10 would recommend.
