I always got shin splints until I transitioned to barefoot/minimalist 10 years ago at age 30. No shin splints since. Of course, ymmv.

My understanding of shin splints is that they're essentially caused by stress / repeat impact, whereas toe-lift stresses and impacts overall are greatly reduced by barefoot stride / forefoot strike.

It's been a long time (at least 5 years) since I looked carefully into the available science on any of this, so current research is almost certainly worth while before transitioning.

I would recommend anyone who is transitioning start with minimalist shoes like vivobarefoot (love em) or xero (love em) and do a program like couch-to-5k to retrain your gait. Also, learn to run in place and then lean forward to move forward.

Off topic, but switching to zero drop for running at 30yo completely resolved my lifelong shin splints and knee problems. Of course experience varies. Haven't tried Lems, but they are on my list....

Haven't tried Lems, but they are on my list. I need wide, too. Xero and Altras (wide) work for me, but sustainability is a plus.

I agree about users doing their own content takedown in all modes available to them. I'm not in the EU, but I've located tools for overwriting all of my comments to hopefully put whatever dent in the machine that I can.

I found myself in a similar emotional space after 15 years in a company that changed for the worse during my time there. It took me months to realize that by moving on I had set myself free from a mode of unhappiness I had not even realized had become my norm.

I would like to echo others in offering you my admiration and thanks. The integrity you are showing is of immeasurable worth. Cheers.

Honest question. Can you delete all posts on the way out the door? I'm not sure that would even be a decent thing to do, just wondering from a technical perspective. Just nuke the entire place....

I'm not sure that would even be a decent thing to do, just wondering from a technical perspective.

Just nuke the entire place. Wipe out all subscriptions, wipe all posts. Shut it down. Walk away. When they come back in to turn it on, everything is gone.

Indeed, I suppose the status quo varies from one locale to another. I'm in the US, and the status quo is the carriers can do what they want, at least as long as they are wireless. And it would seem that there are moves afoot in the EU to make exactly such discrimination at the ISP level within the bounds of law: https://www.computerweekly.com/news/365531910/MWC-2023-Netflix-pushes-back-against-telcos-in-net-neutrality-row

I take your point about net neutrality not being about application-level platforms and suggest that while technically correct, it is merely drawing an arbitrary line that obfuscates what is underneath the same fundamental behavior: a man-in-the-middle limiting the transfer of information across his network. I am hardly alone in seeing the two issues as being fundamentally the same, and at least in my country, this is one of the most contentious (socially and legally) issues of the day. I found this to be a decent round-up of the current state of this question here: https://mtsu.edu/first-amendment/article/1561/social-media

MRNA vaccines seem to me a clear and recent example. One might even say the moral panic is ongoing.

I find the notion that net neutrality is the status quo to be somewhat dubious if not outright false.

Some ISPs (here I'm thinking of wireless carriers) discriminate based on content type (e.g. video vs text) and rate-limit / downgrade their throughput accordingly. Such carrier-level discrimination seems to be driven by the desire to up-sell the users onto delivery "packages" or one sort or another, though the excuse offered is always network stability.

Many platforms (search and social media) discriminate against content by demoting it, rate-limiting it, or suppressing it altogether. This platform-level discrimination has largely been driven by the democratically elected politicians you've noted putting pressure on the platforms to censor dissenting view, inconvenient facts, and voices and narratives that run counter to the official, government-approved line. We've seen detailed evidence of ongoing, well-established collaborations between state actors in a variety of 'intel' and 'security' services and the moderation teams of the major platforms. All of this went into overdrive during the COVID pandemic.

Add me to the list of immigrating redditors. 12 years on that site. It was a good run.

Earlier today, Christian's notice that he's shutting down Apollo got me thinking about moving so I dug up an email a friend sent me in May 2018 with this subject line:

An ex-Reddit administrator is aiming to create the Reddit we've always wanted–Tildes is a non-profit community site driven by its users' interests.

I remember looking into ~ at the time; created an account, participated a bit and enjoyed the community, but eventually got distracted by life and drifted away. I lost access to the ~ account I created back then, but that's okay - if memory serves, I created it using my IRL name and don't really want to continue that. I'm using my reddit u/ here for some sense of continuity, though I may regret that, we'll see.

All the nonsense going on with the reddit API made me think it's time to come back and make this my permanent hangout.

My friend who sent me here died in 2021 after getting hit by a car. I wish I could give her a call today and talk trash with her about how shitty reddit has become, but she's gone. I think she'd be glad I found my way back to ~ after all this time.

I like discussing freedom of information, sailing, meditation, cooking (especially bbq), theology, news, politics, culture, and tech.
