The issues you highlight initially kept me from joining Lemmy as well but I was able to figure it out. There are several items that return the spinning wheel instead of any type of message letting you know what the error was. There is a github issue for this and I expect it to be fixed.

Lemmy is far from perfect, but it will continue to improve and these things that are preventing widespread adoption will be ironed out I think. It helps to think of Lemmy as brand-new software. Reddit didn't have comments when it first started out.

The last time r/place happened, there was a "controversy", because a reddit admin removed a hate symbol from the canvas.

But that was back before reddit started making a series of poorly advised decisions to remove things users liked. Back then, most users had a more favorable view of the site than they do now. In thje context that we are operating in right now, I have a feeling that reddit is setting themselves up for another PR problem. This event has the potential to create more drama that will see the site shed even more users to the growing list of alternatives.

Tildes keeps coming up over and over again on the discord for the protest movement. People are really hungry for an alternative to reddit. People have said they are leaving for years and years. but this time has a little different feel to it.

If they do go through with it, there will be something like 20% of reddit users who simply have no way to connect to reddit any longer and if even a third of them never return to reddit that could represent a significant amount of people. I would plan for and expect much greater interest in the site from now on.
