Comment on First time homebuyer who just closed on a house, does anyone have any general advice? in ~life.home_improvement

-
make a point of knowing your neighbors. Literally go to their doors and introduce yourself, often a small gift helps in this interaction. You don't have to be their friend right away, but you will share the same issues and challenges common to the area, so they will be a source of knowledge, tools, advice, support with your house. It is 1000% worth it. The sense of community if you end up having friendship with some of them could be live-changing.
-
walk your neighbourhood and the streets around your house. Become an expert in the area - maybe there is a weird access to the back of your house, a shortcut to the coffee shop nearby, or an empty lot where they could build in the future. It is fun and good exercise, plus gives you situational awareness of your surroundings.
-
Put everything related to mantaince information/papers in a binder: your paint colored cards, every receipt for the house good stuff that’s a big purchase, put every user manual in there, maintenance info, every update or anything that correlates… you’ll Thank you. And so will the buyers after you.
-
enjoy your house and make it a home for you. This is a place that should feel safe, comfortable, and adapted to your needs and wants as much as possible.

Comment on Remote work to wipe out $800 billion from office values, McKinsey says in ~life

You know where those $800 Billion go if people are not in the office, to the local businesses in the suburbs and to online retailers.
Plus, these type of analysis fail to consider the wellbeing of the workers and the health of our societies and the environment. How much is worth an extra hour of free time, a happier workforce and neighborhoods, and a cleaner environment? Are we willing to pay a fraction of $800 Billion for people (all of us really) to have healthier lives? I'm not saying going to the office is bad - I'm saying going because it is a requirement is.

So far, here is the non corporate feeling of the old internet. A bit of Wild West with great people and thoughtful answers.
I’m coming here a couple times a day and always is rewarding

Gaius_Marius Good to know! And thank you for the extra context/clarity. I just uninstalled- was curious about the experience (puke emoji). Like going from a golf course (still artificial but a pretty garden) to a crowded mall (more artificial and filled with fast food and fast fashion shitty vibe)

I downloaded the official app and it was traumatic. Every 3-4 post a promoted one, infinity scrolling, less control over what the content I was consuming. More Instagram than old Reddit.
Happy with Tildes :-) and the old school experience

I cannot expressed how deep and awesome it is. From the diorama to the Cambridge math profesor to the shaman looking dancing figures. Please go and watch it now, you will find your perspective on life renewed….
As someone with cero rap exposure and experience this is becoming a rewarding post. I didn't saw your original one and just literally just followed the link in the reply above from CosmicDefect and spent a solid 45mins pretending I was a YouTuber doing a reactions video for each one of the recommendations - I think I now need to go deeper into rap.
Thank you!
