Very bad slurring of words, sometimes even creating new words that make perfect sense to you but not to anyone else. This phenomenon is cause by drinking vast quantities of alcohol. Rum produces the best snarggling

Sounds better to me, but award feels like something special you'd do (similar to reddit gold) not something to try and make the thing more visible.

Yeah, I meant it more than just "it can be abused" too. If nothing stands out about it, I can't intuitively know. Maybe there are more users working here and I don't know their names. Maybe someone tagged a post "changelog" because they have a suggestion that the changelog should have a certain format. As a user, I like things to be obvious, and seeing official and non-official looking exactly the same is confusing, that's all.

As long as opt-in allows me to set it as my default, I'm in. I don't want to have to always click something to say give me notifications.

Same. People seem to think being a downer makes him realistic or because he's in our world, it's different. But that's the opposite of his character. Superman is hopeful in spite of how bad it is....

Same. People seem to think being a downer makes him realistic or because he's in our world, it's different. But that's the opposite of his character. Superman is hopeful in spite of how bad it is. If ever we needed an example like that, it's now.

And people who say it's more realistic to have that specific character trait don't understand that people are different. Some people are positive when things are bad. Makes it less realistic if everyone is the same.

Makes sense for now but that wouldn't scale. Could be hours before someone in charge notices someone uses a tag they shouldn't have if the site gets big, right?

what's stopping someone from posting with that tag?

Losing the ability to tag anything anymore if you abuse the system, having your trust (once that is implemented) reset set to 0, permanently set to 0 or even getting outright banned from the site.

And while I wouldn't have directly gotten a notification if you hadn't replied to a comment, the thread still would have been marked for me as having new comments because I have the "track visits" feature turned on: https://tildes.net/settings/comment_visits - I need to find a better way to explain/promote that feature, since it seems like most people aren't using it, and I think it's one of the better ones.

When I saw it, I didn't look very close and thought it was about tracking to help development or something. Now I see it's basically the showing new comments feature, but you're trying to make sure the user understands what's involved. I'd recommend flipping it: Make the setting explain the benefit, but where they go to select it, explain what's involved, tracking-wise.

What about instead of "score" it was "grade"? The users could "upgrade." ;) OK, that's probably confusing, though hahaha

I like the ticks. Wait, that sounds weird when I read it back ;)

I avoided words like endorse, approve, applaud, and appreciate because I think the point is you want to express the post/comment is worthwhile, not necessarily that you agree with it. These make it seem like it should be an "agree" button, which I don't think is a good idea.

I think part of it is how it's viewed by different people:

    1. Those with a computer-science background already have a mindset to start from 0
    2. Others have a mindset to start from 1, thus 0 is already negative.

But either way, when you take into account what people are used to, there will absolutely be a negative connotation to 0. On reddit 0 means someone explicitly downvoted you. It's ingrained in our consciousness now. "0 for a score is bad."

I'd rather get a notification and go check it out right away than find I have 10 of them next time I check the site, for instance.

But maybe I'm just not as active as other users where it's more annoying. However, disabling notifications per post/comment is useful for that. Also, a suggestion I made on reddit once about solving the "my inbox exploded" issues is to automatically set that if it explodes. Like if it's getting x replies a minute, auto-disable them with a notification such as "You're getting way too many here, so we turned it off. Go turn it back on if you like."

Only thing is it can be inconsistent. It throws me off a bit too now when I don't see comment votes. Am I just looking at the wrong spot or does it have no votes yet? I assume that won't last long, but newbies should always be considered, and they may not adapt as well as others.

I'd prefer to see 1 by default.
