Arsenal through and through since I started watching the premier league in 07/08. Too late to see the invincibles or even see Henry in an Arsenal shirt. Many ups, but mostly downs. Victims of our own expections and being a big club without the resources to wield in order to back that up. Having to watch top player after top player leave to seek greener pastures and trophies... RVP, Cesc, heck even Adebayor sprinting and knee-sliding across the pitch in sky blue haunts my nightmares.

It's been really cathartic to see the team gel and evolve under Mikel Arteta. I truly can't wait for each match day, and seeing the fans, players, and staff really buy into the project is awesome to see. Long may it continue. COYG!

Those are two I'd definitely recommend to someone who's not sold on traditional anime tropes, but just wants to dip their toes into the genre and watch some compelling stories unfold.

I have to mention one of my favorite games of all time, Deadly Premonition. Looks pretty ugly, unwieldy to control, janky beyond compare... But weirdness, story, and characters are so endearing and captivating. Lots of people give it the "so-bad-it's-good" label, but it's so much more than that to me. I haven't played the sequel yet, but it's near the top of my backlog.

This is more or less my take as well. At the very least, Havertz is a different profile of attacker to anyone else in our front line. Taller and decent with his head while still being very technical. But, he's not a target man or particularly good at holding up play; definitely nowhere near the true No. 9 that Arsenal fans pine over.

I think more than anything, this indicates some sort of change in system coming in the future. If the system weren't to change at all, I'd expect Havertz to be deployed anywhere along the front three or even next to Odegaard as a left 8 in games were we're expected to dominate the ball.

I also don't think you spend $65 mil on a pure backup. Havertz will start a decent amount of games, and I think Arteta will have learned to trust his squad more as a lesson from last season. There's no reason for Saka to play so many minutes next year and be run into the ground again. Obviously Saka and Martinelli will play the most, but hopefully Arteta will be more willing to rotate Jesus, Havertz, Trossard, and even Nelson to keep the squad fresh.

I still have a healthly skepticism towards Havertz as I feel he's been pretty poor lately, but, so has everyone in that Chelsea team. I don't look forward to him squadering chances, but scoring goals is not really our issue. We need quality squad depth and Havertz improves us in that regard. There's a player in there, and while I don't like the fee, I trust Arteta and the decision makers at the club.

Same! I went waaay down the rabbit hole after the Rolling Fork EF4 earlier this year. I've always been very into weather and extreme weather, but something about that tornado was different for me. Maybe it was that I just randomly caught some of it live or that there was so much incredible footage from storm chasers, but it was a truly horrific, almost otherworldly, storm. Like something you'd only see in a nightmare...

Some favorite YouTube channels I've discovered are:

    • Carly Anna WX - great video essays of tornado disasters with emphasis on the human cost

    • Pecos Hank - doesn't upload very often, but when he does, it's usually something incredible

    • Skip Talbot - specifically his super detailed breakdown of the 2013 El Reno tornado

Also, storm chasers have been absolutely killing it this year with close intercepts and footage. But, the dark side to this is an alarming number of chasers have been struck by tornados recently. Incredibly none of those chasers have died or been seriously injured, but history tells us there can be grave consequences for "flying too close to the sun" with regards to extreme weather.

To me the "game" of golf is very compelling and lends itself to tons of interesting situations with regards to player versus course and risk versus reward, etc. However, the "sport" of golf is not...

Part of that is the barrier to entry and etiquette requirements, and part is that the sport just simply does not televise well. Tiny, impossible-to-see ball and no concept of how diffcult the shots are without having played the sport extensively yourself.

I do play disc golf pretty avidly, and I would say it solves some of the problems for someone, like me, who is interested in the "game" but not the "sport". The cost of entry is much lower, the etiquette is there but much more casual, and the watching the professional tour, while not available on network TV, is much more engaging with larger object to follow and more obvious physicality of sport.

Disc golf obviously has it's own problems as well, but that's my 2ยข on the subject.

I recently finished the second season of a hilarious but little-known Canadian animated TV show called Gary and His Demons about a middle-aged, "Chosen One" demon slayer who just wants to retire. The amount of laughs, charm, and animation quality that this show packs into each episode's less than 10 minute run time truly blew my expectations away. I originally stumbled upon it while browsing Mondo Media's channel on the now-defunct VRV animation app and now, tragically, the show is not available to stream anywhere in the US currently. But, it got me thinking...

If I have a few favorite niche shows that are difficult to access or stream, then surely others do as well. I was also inspired by this thread about similarly obscure video games.

The other show that immediately comes to mind for me is GameCenter CX, a precursor to the traditional "Let's Play", in which Shinya Arino, a Japanese comedian, attempts to clear brutal retro games in one sitting. I randomly came across the show while searching for unique Nintendo DS titles and browsing the Wikipedia page for "Retro Game Challenge", a curious title that I assumed was shovelware. The game is actually very good and now the show is one of my favorite cozy and comfortable shows to just chill out to.

So, what are your favorite treasured and unique TV shows? I'm looking for mostly for shows that are not easily available on traditional streaming services or physical media, but feel free to suggest very underrated shows as well!

I haven't played the Super Solvers games specifically, but played a lot of The Learning Company / Knowledge Adventure / Humongous Entertainment games growing up. Check out eXo's Retro Learning Pack if you're unfamiliar! It has hundreds and hundreds of those games emulated through DOSBox and using LaunchBox as a front-end. Super easy to set up with the included batch scripts. I've been teaching my 2 year old some computer literacy using these games, and they are so perfect and nostalgic. Nobody really makes games like these anymore unfortunately...

I need to rewatch Gurren Lagann though. So over the top; I love just reading quotes from time to time:

"Even so, I will...! I will believe! I will believe in the me that believes in us, humans and the future! This drill is... my SOUL!"

I've recently become really into these types of games since becoming a father and, in general, slowing the pace of my life down. When I do have time for games, I usually just want to chill out and have it be more of a meditative experience. Games that stand out to me in this vein are:

    • Stardew Valley for obvious reasons. This game has been discussed to no end.
    • Story of Seasons (particularly the Doraemon varients). I was not even aware of Doraemon before playing these games, but the art direction and character development are superior to any Harvest Moon / Story of Seasons game I've played. And the second game even has local co-op, which I have never seen before in the series.
    • Lost in Play is a very charming point-and-click puzzle adventure game with a great art direction.
    • Tori Dori / Tiny Lands are fun "spot the differences" games with a poly art style and great soundtracks.
    • Cuddly Forest Friends is a sort of virtual pet-like experience where you take care of various forest creatures and play mini games. Very cute and a huge hit with my kids.

Honestly, the thing I like to do most is take a competitive game I love and play it solo and more casually. I usually play Super Smash Bros Melee every day and practice tech skill or try my hand at All Star on the 20XX mod which makes the CPUs significantly more difficult. I also used to do this with Rocket League and training mode. It's a good way for me to feel connected with those past competitive experiences without putting too much pressure on myself and just have fun with it.
