That's an interesting thought. I'm not a programmer myself either so I can't vouch for viability.

However, would the original people in that thread, who thought they were signing up for casual talk be dissuaded because now it's in ~talk.serious?

Or is there a way for the post itself to become a new thread on ~talk.serious, so that further discussions can be there without impinging on the original conversation? It brings into questions about context and thread-jacking variables once the categories start moving around.

I'm sure there's smarter people than me who must have thought of these dilemmas.

I think quality will always be a challenge especially as the site grows. In the future, I can see where people might have not bothered to read through the entire thread before commenting just due to the sheer number of people who have commented previously. I've felt that siren's call myself. I don't know if there's a balance to having people be heard vs possibly having replies that tackle the same idea crop up multiple times.

Intention, the ability to have an open mind, and empathy are what separates a troll from a totally unsuspecting question. As long as the poster is genuine about having those qualities be present in how they respond; I think it's worthy of having a discussion.

In somewhat reference back to their thread, English is getting to be a somewhat global language and it's constantly evolving to suit global needs. I'm sure we'll see a lot of words' definition change or be modified in our lifetimes.

I'll take on that challenge. I think it goes to the definition of what we consider "work".

I volunteer a fair bit and have been discussion with a few other fellow volunteers whether or not we would continue to "volunteer" if we were being paid for it. Generally the consensus was that if we were paid, we probably wouldn't do it anymore. There's something to be said about exploring your passions without necessarily getting anything back in return. Hobbies and work sometimes can flow back and forth a little. In the future I hope that work in the current sense will take less of our time but our life's work can be a little more fulfilling and wonderful.

Sometimes though, I think even in casual conversation it may split off into a deep dive on a topic when someone feels passionate about it. Conversations ebb and flow. What would happen if someone casually asks a question but a qualified person comes along and gives an amazing in-depth answer? I can see thread-splitting and meta discussions on the rise until something more formal is introduced or ironed out.

I think automation has been a long process that is just becoming more and more evident in our society now that the tasks automation can do have been expanding. We used to have people on the street selling news papers, more tellers than ATMs, more miners and less machinery, etc. I think it's only lately that automation have started moved towards what we had considered as the exclusive domains of humanity. Now days we have Siri and other similarly enabled devices and google assistant that can somewhat reasonably pass a Turing test. Hopefully, this change brings about a renaissance in creative thought that may be one of the last bastions of humanity. I'm reminded of a show that was on many years ago called Masters of Science Fiction that was narrated by Stephen Hawking where I'm paraphrasing: In the future, humanity may be determined by our faults and imperfections rather than an ideal perfect being.
