I like the idea of a starter car to scavenge from or use as a point of reference, but part of me wants to start with as little as I can and learn from it as I go. Hoping that way I get a bit more mileage out of the project and hobby as a whole. I'll do a bit more digging on low cost starting options, but the points conniereynhart brought up on the battery technology may be my new filter.

Where did you end up with your electrical components when you designed your own? I'm mostly looking for simple/durable, and don't particularly care about trying to maximize speed.

Thanks for the response! I like the idea of potentially scavenging from another car, those Wltoys ones are much cheaper than most of the others I saw recommended (and actually come with the transmitter/batteries). I was looking at $200 being the sot of median price for a kit, so spending a little extra and knowing I'd have all the electronics seemed reasonable.

What repairs did you have to make? Curious if I should be buying additional parts off the bat or if it's something that's more wear and tear. Actually, if there were any issues with the electrics that would be best to know!

The input on the battery is super helpful. I'll look at the G2 series as I'd prefer the more fool-proof options! Could you elaborate on the purpose of the battery checking tool? Is there more to it than knowing what percentages it's at?

I've wanted to get into the remote controlled (RC) hobby for awhile now, but scratching just a bit deeper than the cheap toys you can buy at a department store can start to get quite expensive. I also feel like the fun will wear quite quickly buying a complete car. A kit car could be interesting, but I wanted something more.

I recently had the idea (definitely not novel) to make it more of project and build my own RC car, relying on 3D printing, laser cut, and metal components where necessary (though I'm sure after a few crashes, it'll start to feel like every component). My skill level with electronics is relatively low and I know I'll enjoy the mechanical challenges more, so I'm coming to you on the question of electrics.

In my cursory searches for the electrical components, I believe I need the following:

    1. Transmitter & Receiver
    2. Electronic Speed Controller (ESC) & Motor
    3. Battery & some sort of battery charger
    4. Servo motor

I've mostly been looking for brands that offer the full suite. Probably limiting my assessment, but made it easier to get started exploring. So far it seems like Spektrum might be the best price point for the whole set (though still not cheap by any means):

    1. Spektrum Dx3 Transmitter w/ SR315 Receiver
    2. Spektrum Firma 70A Brushed ESC w/ Brushed Motor
    3. 5000mAh 2S LiPo Battery w/ Charger
    4. Standard Digital Servo

I'm mostly wondering if I'm missing anything component-wise. Or if I'm going completely off-base with jumping to these types of components when I could be fine with something much cheaper. I tried to start with looking at what entry-level RC recommendations there are, but most of those lead to kit cars. Also, my overall lack of familiarity with electrical components means I haven't even considered what sort of simple DC motors I could get by with, though I guess I'm not looking to program anything at the moment.

I've not invested anything besides time researching so any input/advice is welcome. Thanks for reading!

Probably got them from a similar reddit thread long ago, and have never actually used them of course. But they also never fail to bother my wife, who then makes me repeat them to her friends.

Love a lot of the recommendations here and looking forward to checking out some of these that I haven't seen before. Not that machining is the only thing I watch on youtube, but most of the other interesting channels I watch have already been recommended.

First and foremost, I have to recommend Hand Tool Rescue One of many restoration youtubers out there, but his humor is the best. Additionally, he tends to actually restore the antique tools he works on rather than just modifying and changing them to his whims. The standard videos (ex. Why did they stop making these?) tend to fall into the no talking (ASMR-ish) style, but he also does a series of old patent recreations where he talks through the ideas and work (ex. Patent Remake: 1909 Ratchet Wrench).

Similarly, another recommendation for the great jokes and sense of humor, This Old Tony. Though I'm surprised he wasn't recommended already, seems like he's been on youtube a long time. He does a fair amount of teaching machining techniques or showing off tools, but also just having fun most of the time. His older content tends to fall into the no talking ASMR-style, but I'd say a lot of the stuff I've watched released within 6 years leans toward the educational, talking-hands-style.

A channel I recently got into, but am enjoying for the pure information/exposure to new things is Torque Test Channel. Very informative and just well structured content about all things tools (though mostly torque testing those tools).

I've enjoyed a few songs from Two Door Cinema Club, but generally found their music to have a very samey sound. Don't know the technical terms, but I think it has to do with the lead guitar tuning/riff. This is the first song that's come up* that's had a different sound and appeal. Thought it'd be worth posting in case other people had written them off like I had.

*I tend to use spotify song radios to find new (to me) music, this song is by no means new so that's I put the year in the title.

It's been stuck in my head for over a week. Giving their discography another chance now!

I had seen the threads leading up to this and saw someone suggest The Last Express, among others that I found interesting. So when I saw the thread this morning and that I had 12 minutes left to get it on discount and just enough in my steam wallet, I jumped on it. So count me in on the Steam version, I'll likely play on desktop because I get easily frustrated by control scheme muck about on the Steam Deck.

The Last Express interested me because I had read an article maybe a year back about it, that I believe I found here. I spent some time looking for it before making my post because I thought it would be a great treat for people to read after playing (I haven't re-read it for fear of spoiling myself, so I'm not actually certain if it contains spoilers). Looking forward to the experience!

A sort of history of the creation of The Last Express. I thoroughly enjoyed the read having never personally played Prince of Persia or The Last Express, but if I remember correctly it explains why this classic is more cult than standard. The art research and roto-scoping stuff is super cool too, having never really had the concept explained before reading this article.

Off the cuff, before I go to sleep comment, but having read through this chain, I think the context missing is that "AI" and LLMs in general have been assigned a position of authority by their makers. It's true that reasoning is similar enough to pattern recognition which is what the LLMs are doing at a high level, and that you can "teach" an LLM like you would a person. However, these LLMs have been assigned a position of authority, a la "because they have troves of information, they must be smart". That false authority requires having enough knowledge to recognize when the LLM doesn't actually know what's it's talking about. Lying, hallucinating, or whatever you want to call it is the LLM not coming to the correct statistical pattern, but still saying here is the information you want. The LLM doesn't know it's wrong and the maker is financially motivated to ignore those scenarios and continue pretending it's the smartest most helpful tool on the block.

Stopping myself here to sleep, but that means I'm not really connecting this point back to the greater thread unfortunately. Sorry!

Figured I should note the lens that shapes my comment. I tend to see myself as a creative both professionally and in my hobbies, so I don't have any enthusiasm for LLMs as they currently stand.

Free with the caveat that they will use your data/designs to train their AI. I've known AI driven CAD was coming, but was under the impression that we were further away due to the computational power required (and also that much of the more complex designs/training opportunities will be under proprietary lock and key). It sounds like this was either designed specifically with AI in mind or someone realized that their direction (optimization) could maximize investment/profit by integrating AI/data harvesting.

Not completely in the loop on whether any other big players in the CAD world have started to integrate AI, but this engine level optimization may be what's limiting them at the moment.

Might have found something for you!

Searched "coiled spring encased in plastic for furniture", and the first website was this possibly German website for restoration. Searching for "exper springs" also turned up some other websites that sell them, but I think this is what you are looking for. That website also turned up some good keywords in the lengthy description below that might help you find the make/model you have too.

Going off your pictures I don't think this is quite the same one because the arms are less square, but it does have a picture of the springs and shows how the branding might be inlaid in the wood.

I don't necessarily want to ruin your interpretation or search for meaning because I think that's the best part of connecting with poetry, but here's the author giving his thoughts and then reading it.

Before I decided to do some searching, I was thinking pretty similar to your interpretation. There was an opportunity for connection, but they never crossed paths on their journey/search. As for the symbols, unless you want to contact the author (there is a email available via search as he's a university professor) I think we'll be stuck guessing. I don't have the right word for it, but that kind of feels like kismet to connect with someone over their poem about missed connections.

P.S. my interpretation for the blue kite and cloud stitching are the connections they did make. I'd interpret the blue kite as something with energy, but delicate that stands out amongst the forest. The cloud as the same sailor that can't be held onto, amongst the pieces of her less fortunate life.

I had pretty much the same reaction to Hammer after a few years of not using it, but recently something clicked and I've been enjoying it again. It's a fun, creative outlet where the barrier to entry is so low that most anyone can create a map. And with this update, I think that'll be possible for much longer, maybe in a similar spirit of how ubiquitous Doom is.

Fire Emblem: Binding Blade. Yes, the one with Roy in it.
While it is a text & image LP, it is by far my favorite. And given the nature of this site, I figure someone on here might enjoy the read. Fire Emblem's story and gameplay can be convoluted at times, but this writer put in a ton of effort to fully capture the game and spice it up in hilarious ways.

For reference, Binding Blade (released 2002, #6 in the series) was originally only released in Japanese with a English, fan translation eventually released about a decade later. So a lot of fans of Fire Emblem have actually never experienced the story that Roy (one of the many Fire Emblem sword users in Smash Bros) comes from. This game also preceded the first Fire Emblem game released in western markets, so if you played Fire Emblem Blazing Blade (a prequel to Binding Blade) there are a ton of references that piqued my nostalgia.

For the most part I read news/stories through aggregators like Tildes, so I'm not sure I've read much if any from venturebeat before so maybe I'm missing context. Anyway, what is the author trying to construe by specifically using an AI generated image for the article header and then proceeding to draw attention to it with a disclaimer? Actually irks me for some reason. Is it tone deaf or trying to convey some sort of bias?

Or maybe now that I've thought about it far too long, something that's purely out of the author's hands. Maybe the editor chuckled to themselves as they generated the image.
