Re: reading something about every time you access a memory it can/does get altered, could you be thinking of this Radiolab episode about memory? It’s been years since I’ve listened to it, but I remember (hah) a segment where they compared accessing memories to a tape being overwritten (or maybe degraded?) over time. I’ll have to give it a listen tomorrow, as I’ve thought of that part of the episode often when it comes to memory but now am having trouble remembering the fine details!

I’m a sculptural woodworker, mostly making small housewares. Apprenticed for a couple of years under someone who now makes large-scale sculptural furniture pieces, but I never got into the furniture side of things.

Woodworking has been relegated to hobby status for the past few years. I realized after working production-style that it was becoming less and less of an “escape” and I was no longer enjoying my time in the shop. As a hobbyist, I’ve reclaimed a bit of that magic :)

When i’m feeling particularly drained, I like to put together meals by assembling components rather than actual cooking. For example, I make something I call tuna toast - a couple slices of some kind of seeded/hearty bread toasted, spread mayo or mashed avocado or hummus on the bread, then layer sliced red onion, sliced hard boiled egg, sliced tomato, capers, good quality canned tuna, and season with salt and pepper. Sometimes I throw in a few anchovies or sprinkle with red pepper flakes. Eat it open faced. It’s quite hearty and feels a bit more nourishing than just a plain old sandwich. And, if you make the hard boiled eggs ahead of time, it takes like 10 minutes to assemble.

If you feel like turning on the stove, a staple in our house is something called egg roll in a bowl. Ground pork, sliced cabbage, shredded carrots, whatever other veg you want to throw in, and a soy sauce/sesame oil based sauce. This is the recipe I started with, but there are many variations out there.

Awesome! I’ll check those out. I’m a big fan of choose your level of investment hobbies, which is why this feels similar to mech keyboards to me. With keebs you can buy a ready made board, or go so far as to design your own circuit boards and hand pick components to make the board of your dreams (or whatever fits your super niche use case that’s not available commercially). Anyway, looks like I have a rabbit hole to go down!

This is what I came to recommend as well. I recently re-read one of my all time favorites (Snow Crash) after a long dry spell, and it’s gotten me solidly back into reading again. I could have just as easily waffled around for a month with a book I feel meh about, but reading something I know I love got me back into the habit quickly.

Think I just found a new hobby, ha. Feels similar to mechanical keyboards in a way. What’s an average cost for a fancy flashlight?

Just finished re-reading Wool by Hugh Howey. Last read through the Silo series 9 or 10 years ago, enough time for me to forget almost everything that happens, so it felt a little bit like reading it for the first time again. The way Howey writes is just so enjoyable to me. I think I read the last third of the book in one sitting because I just couldn’t put it down.

I work in tech, but spend most of my free time pursuing creativity in various formats. Lately I’ve been dabbling in creating large scale fabric flowers, and also have been attempting to make a tabletop water feature/aquascape sort of thing.

I’m trying to cut back on doom scrolling, so the higher quality content here feels like a better fit for me.
