I had pen pals over email and back then could only dial-up with my modem once per day. I would retrieve new mail, send any mail that I had been writing, and then it was wait for next day to come.
When you take immediacy out of communication, it can become so much more meaningful.

My inner monologue is represented by my own voice.
If I had to solve a crossword puzzle, I would project the puzzle on a 2D plane in 3D space to my mind's eye.
Sometimes I won't talk in my head though and speak out loud talking to myself. Hearing myself helps. Same thing when I read a novel, if I read it out loud, it helps me with immersion.
